RICHMOND, Va. — Javier Herrera snapped a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring triple in the seventh inning, leading the Richmond Flying Squirrels (52-58) to a 3-2 Eastern League win over the Portland Sea Dogs (54-56) on Wednesday night at the Diamond.
Portland has dropped the first two games of the series and finished 13-17 in July.
Richmond’s bullpen retired all 11 batters faced.
Miguel Celestino (1-7) allowed the game-winning triple to Herrera and suffered the loss for Portland. Celestino walked Ryan Lollis to start the seventh. Joe Panik moved Lollis into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt and Herrera tripled to right-center field.
Matt Barnes was strong in a no-decision for Portland, working 5.2 innings on four hits, two runs (one earned), three walks and seven strikeouts.
Portland committed three errors in the first inning, but it only led to one run for Richmond. Mark Minicozzi picked up an RBI single.
The Sea Dogs tied the game in the fourth inning off starter Jack Snodgrass. Tony Thomas led off with a single and scored on a run-scoring fielder’s choice by Travis Shaw, who later gave Portland a 2-1 lead with an RBI double, scoring Christian Vazquez.
The teams complete the three-game series tonight at 7:05 p.m. Portland starts Keith Couch (8-3, 3.80) and Richmond lefty Chris Gloor (8-5, 3.53).
