Last Saturday at the Wiscasset Speedway was a bright and sunny afternoon for the track’s 44th anniversary celebration.

Drivers from the past and present gathered on the track during intermission for special recognition and a ceremony. The Speedway concession stand was named Wilford’s in honor of the track founder, Wilford Cronk.

The Outlaw Mini race was first on the docket. This was a quick 20-five lap feature. George Fortin was in the pole position, followed by Shawn Kimball and Jimmy Childs.

By midpoint of the race, Fortin had solidified his lead and he sped to the finish as the victor, with Kimball second and Childs third.

A 35-lap Late Model Sportsman race was next.

Starting in the pole position was Allen Moeller, followed by Nick Reno and Nick Hinkley of Wiscasset.

Steve Reno of West Bath passed Nick Reno in lap three to take third. In lap 10, Nick Reno saw an opportunity to advance and passed Hinkley to take second. Darin Ripley, who started in eighth, passed Hinkley on the front stretch of lap 18.

Lap 23 saw a caution after contact between Dough Coombs and Nick Reno. Nick Reno went into the wall on the front stretch and Coombs headed to the pits. Alex Waltz spun on the track during lap 27 and a caution was thrown.

Moeller, the race leader, spun sideways on the restart. Waltz spun into the front stretch wall and went to the pits. Moeller was sent to the back.

When racing action resumed, Steve Reno became the race leader and placed first, with Ripley second and Hinkley third.

4-Cylinder Pro Stock

A 25-lap 4-Cylinder Pro Stock feature was next. Pole leader James Logan surged ahead on the start, while Kevin Sherman and Tim Jeski battled for position, and on lap three, Jeski made contact from behind.

Sherman went off the track and a caution was thrown. Jeski and Sherman went to the back for the restart. Craig Dunn moved to second and Lisbon Falls’ Jeff Prindall moved to third. Sherman raced hard, and by lap 11 overtook Dunn for second.

During lap 22, Jeski passed Sherman on turn two. However, coming out of turn two, Jeski spun out of control on the back stretch. His car collected Sherman, Daryl Kaulback and Travis Dunbar. Dunbar went into the wall on the back stretch and was extracted from his vehicle.

The race was called official with three laps remaining. Logan took first, Dunn second, and Prindall third.

Although the Mini Truck Division had been consolidated with the Thunder 4 Division, six trucks raced with a 10-lap feature.

Starting in the pole position was Herb Farrar. Behind him was Corey Williams and Roger Allard.

With one lap remaining, Gerry McKenna surged ahead and looked for an opportunity to claim second. At the checkered, the trucks finish three wide, with only fractions of a second between them. Allard of Harpswell claimed first, McKenna second and Williams third.

Super Stock had a 20-lap feature race. Josh Bailey of Wiscasset had the pole position, followed by James Osmond of Wiscasset and Bobby Mesimer of Woolwich. Midway through the race, Osmond had a five-car length lead over Bailey.

Lap 15 saw a caution when Ryan Robinson went off the track on turn three. When racing action resumed, eventual winner Osmond took the lead, with Mesimer second and Bailey third.

A 10-lap Thunder-4 was next with Leandra Martin of Richmond in the pole position.

Martin failed to have a good start and Cody Robbins moved to first quickly and stayed there. Martin spun out on turn one and went to the back after a caution. Kevin Sherman of Wiscasset placed second with Kalib Bernatchez third.

In the 25-lap Pro Stock feature, Chris Thorne took the pole. Scott Chubbuck of Bowdoin moved up from the back of the pack. On lap six, Chubbuck passed Casey Nash of Richmond for third. Eventually, Chubbuck and Bill Penfold were in the front racing for position.

With two laps remaining, Chubbuck piloted his Ford Fusion to the outside of the track, making a bid for first. With less than a lap remaining, the pair rounded turn four, nose to nose. They both swept under the checkered with Chubbuck a close second ahead of Penfold. Thorne finished in third.

“He (Penfold) slowed up a little bit and I went to the outside, and luckily, I was able to pass him,” said Chubbuck. “I would like to thank Bartlett Auto Sales, and my wife, Stacy.”

The last feature of the night was a 15- lap Strictly Street with Tasha Dyer of Arrowsic in the pole. Behind her were Mike Moody of Topsham and Zach Poland of Woolwich.

Dyer had a 10-car length lead by the second lap. Corey Morgan passed Poland on the outside of turn two for third. The following lap, Morgan overtook Moody on the front stretch and claimed second place. Dyer claimed her first Strictly Street victory at Wiscasset.

Post-race, Dyer said, “It’s about time. We have worked so hard for this all year. It felt really good. I would like to thank my crew chief, Todd. I would like to thank my grandfather, Ryan Barnes, Dillon, all my sponsors, and the car owner, Jerry.”

Morgan came in second with Moody third.

Wiscasset Speedway resumes racing action this upcoming Saturday with its Group One lineup of divisions: Prostock, Super Stock, New England 4-cylinder Prostock and Thunder 4. The flex race of the week will a 100-lap Enduro race. The Enduro race is open to 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder or 8-cylinder cars.
