Sherry Morrison, an Edward Jones financial advisor in South Portland, received the firm’s Goodknight Plan Completion Recognition Award for her efforts to provide a greater level of service to her clients while helping the firm continue its steady growth. The Goodknight Program pairs an incoming financial adviser with a veteran financial adviser as a mentor. Part of the mentoring allows the veteran financial adviser to transition some of his or her clients to another Edward Jones financial adviser in order to improve client service and grow the branch office network. Morrison also received the firm’s Ed Armstrong Award for her exceptional achievement in building client relationships.

Deb Alpern received the Maine Chapter of the Society for Social Work Leadership in Health Care Social Work Leader of the Year Award. Each year, the Maine chapter honors two individuals who have demonstrated exemplary achievements and social work leadership skills. Alpern, a palliative care social worker at Mid Coast Hospital since 2000, was recognized for her clinical work and her commitment to share expertise of palliative care through education and awareness. She is renowned in the community for her thoughtful, knowledgeable, and compassionate support of patients and families through critical illness and end of life.

Mercy Hospital was awarded a three-year American College of Radiology Gold Seal of Accreditation in nuclear medicine. Nuclear medicine uses small amounts of injected or ingested radioactive material to diagnose and treat a variety of diseases, including many types of cancers, heart disease, and certain other abnormalities within the body. The accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded to facilities meeting ACR practice guidelines and technical standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and expert medical physicists. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed.

New Hires, Promotions and Appointments

Steven Hewins was appointed as interim executive director of the Portland Downtown District. Hewins, who has been actively engaged in downtown Portland’s business and hospitality community for more than 30 years, assumed the position at the beginning of August. The board also elected Brad McCurtain as president, Michael Mastronardi as first vice president, Gerard Kiladjian as second vice president and Mike McDonald as treasurer.

The Maine Center for Creativity elected Katherine Greenleaf as president, Jamie Morin as vice president, Tom MacDonald as treasurer and Alan Atkins as clerk in June. Sam Sezak and Linda Varrell were named to the board of directors. Greenleaf heads Greenleaf Consulting, Morin is senior vice president of operations at WEX, Inc., MacDonald a senior vice president at Mechanic Savings BankAlan Atkins is a principal at Atkins Chowdry LLC. Founded in May 2005, MCC nurtures innovative companies and people in Maine by developing projects and programs supporting the growth of creative industries and the arts.

Katherine Fullam Harris, of Cumberland, was elected to the board of directors of the Maine Community Foundation. Harris, a Maine native, is MaineHealth’s vice president of government and employer relations. She previously served as director of government relations at Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and held positions at the Maine Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services and Planned Parenthood of Northern New England.  A member of the community foundation’s Cumberland County Committee, Harris is a trustee of the Edward H. Daveis Benevolent Fund.

Joel Guarna, a clinical psychologist specializing in health psychology, wellness, addiction, trauma, cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based psychotherapies, has joined Mercy Pain Center. He earned his doctorate in psychology at Bowling Green State University, completed his postdoctoral training at the Boston Consortium in Clinical Psychology and also served as a staff psychologist for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Healthcare System in Boston.

Steve Malcom, Lee Mallett, Warren Miskell, Erin Schaeffer and Scott Steinberg have joined the North Yarmouth Academy Board of Trustees. Malcom, of Boothbay, is owner and Chief Operating Officer of Knickerbocker Group, an architecture, design, cabinetry, and construction service based in Portland and Boothbay. Yarmouth resident Mallett is a private investor. Miskell, of Yarmouth, is a woodturner and sculptor and was a teacher. Portland resident Schaeffer is chief operating officer and president of H&D Title and Closing Services, and Steinberg, of Cumberland, is director of admission at Bates College.

Shannon Trainor, currently clinical director at Crossroads, will succeed Barbara Dacri as executive director at the end of September. She was unanimously selected after a national search by the organization’s board of directors. Mary Anne Roy will become clinical director. Roy is a licensed psychologist and has been a part of of the Crossroads clinical team since February of 2010 in the roles of counselor and assistant clinical director. Crossroads offers comprehensive treatment for behavioral health with a gender-specific focus.

Sales

The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority sold the former Navy Lodge and the former Navy Recreation Center and bowling alley, with 3.25 acres of land, to the Priority Real Estate Group of Topsham for $1.1 million. The two buildings sit next to one another on the northwest corner of Pegasus Street and Burbank Avenue, with nearly 35,000 square feet of space. They will be used by the Providence Service Corporation as a school for autistic children and its administrative offices.
