OAKLAND — Freshman Cole Guerin scored his first high school goal as the Mt. Ararat High School boys soccer team opened with a 3-0 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference win against Messalonskee on Saturday.
Robbie Small staked Mt. Ararat (1-0, slated to host Lewiston tonight at 6 p.m.) to a 1-0 halftime lead, with Chris Pepin picking up an assist.
Guerin doubled the visitors advantage with 22:04 remaining, and Mike Crawford, from Small, finished the scoring eight minutes later.
Jon Roux and Mason Griffin combined on six saves in the shutout win, while Messalonskee (0-1) keeper Jonah Webb had two stops.
Both teams finished with eight shots, with Messalonskee holding a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Playing well for Mt. Ararat was Roux and midfielder Andrew McCracken.
“We’re getting better, but it is a long process,” said Mt. Ararat coach Rick Renaud.

In season-opening Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference action Friday at Hampden, Dan Good had a hat trick and Ben Foster notched a pair of assists to help down the visiting Dragons.
Filip Bilek had the other goal, and Isaiah Bess made two saves on two shots.
Evan Murray made nine saves on 16 shots for Brunswick, scheduled to host Mt. Ararat on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.).

Five players scored one goal each as the host Bobcats opened the East-West Conference season with a victory over Valley on Friday.
“It is nice to see Valley back in the league,” said Richmond coach Joe Scribellito. “They were out of the league last year, and on Friday they had more players in uniform than us. That is a great thing!”
Cam Emmons and Cody Tribbett gave the Bobcats a 2- 0 halftime lead, and Brendan Emmons, Nathan Tribbett and Tyler Soucy tallied in the second half.
Dustin Sullivan had three saves for the shutout, while Valley (0-1) keeper Cody Beane had 20 stops.
VINALHAVEN 3
RICHMOND 4
Brendan Emmons and Soucy scored five minutes apart midway through the second half to lift the 2-0 Bobcats to an EWC win.
In a back-and-forth first half, goals by Richmond’s Marcus Blake (assisted by Nate Tribbett) and Cam Emmons (Cody Tribbett) were matched by Vinalhaven’s (0-1) Zeb Campbell (penalty kick) and Aiden Emerson for a 2-2 halftime deadlock.
Brendan Emmons made it a 3-2 game with 24 minutes left, and Soucy’s game-winner came with 19 minutes remaining.
Vinalhaven’s Dalton Hornby (Campbell) completed the scoring with six minutes left.
“We were a little bit flat, with games on back to back days,” Scribellito. “It is nice to have the rest before hosting Greenville on Monday (today at 4 p.m.).”
Sullivan had six saves, while Vinalhaven’s Ethan Mao turned aside 18 shots. Richmond had a 28-9 shot advantage.
