LISBON FALLS — Nichole Jones tipped home a shot from Michaela Bedell with 20:33 remaining in regulation as the defending Class C state champion Lisbon High School field hockey team played to a 1-1 Mountain Valley Conference deadlock with Spruce Mountain on Friday in season-opening action.

The Phoenix (0-0-1) jumped on top 1-0 on a Randi Duguay goal 10:22 into the contest.

“I don’t think we played well in the first half, maybe nerves, but we just didn’t play our type of field hockey,” said Lisbon (0-0-1) coach Julie Wescott, whose Greyhounds host Telstar today at 4 p.m. “We played much better in the second half and the two, eight-minute overtimes. Playing seven-on-seven in overtime is hard, but the girls played well.”

Lisbon held an 8-6 shots advantage and a 13-9 edge in penalty corners.

Greyhounds netminder Stevie Charest and Spruce Mountain goalie Kasey Richards both had five saves.
