BRUNSWICK — An overheating backup generator caused a distress alarm at Parkview Adventist Medical Center during Thursday’s thunderstorms, according to hospital officials.

Smoke from the generator’s motor triggered an alarm in the building shortly after 1 p.m., which prompted firefighters and emergency trucks to respond. The building was evacuated, but by 1:30 p.m. personnel were back inside the building.

“We lost power during the storm, although for only a very short time, and when our generator kicked in a small motor overheated and started to smoke,” said hospital spokeswoman Tory Ryden. “Thankfully, it was nothing serious.”

The outage was one of hundreds reported during the series of severe thunderstorms that rippled through the Mid-coast Thursday. By late afternoon, Central Maine Power Company reported 49 customers in Bath and West Bath, in addition to 13 in Harpswell and one in Freeport, remaining without power.
