Elam, Tierney to speak on human trafficking

Cumberland County Deputy District Attorney Meg Elam and Assistant District Attorney Kate Tierney will speak about human trafficking in greater aPortland and Maine at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, at South Gorham Baptist Church, County Road, in Gorham.

A potluck meal will precede the speakers in the monthly series Potluck With a Purpose. It is designed to provide information about the widespread issue of human trafficking and ways interested individuals are able to make a difference.

Those attending are asked to take food to share for the potluck meal. A free-will offering will be taken to support anti-trafficking causes. All are welcome.

College fair at USM

The Office of Undergraduate Admission at the University of Southern Maine is hosting a college fair from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29, in the Costello Sports Complex on the university’s Gorham campus.

More than 250 colleges and universities, as well as representatives from the Finance Authority of Maine, New England Board of Higher Education and the Office of Financial Aid at the University of Southern Maine will attend. Registration is not required and students are encouraged to take their families.

Pianist in USM performance

Nationally recognized pianist Bridget Convey will perform at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, in Corthell Concert Hall on the Gorham campus of the University of Southern Maine.

In celebration of the 101st anniversary of composer John Cage’s birth, Convey will perform the complete “Sonatas and Interludes” for prepared piano. The performance includes a visual premiere by video artist Hillary Tozier.

Gospel concert series finale

David and Diane Benson of Andover, N.H., will sing at 6:30 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 21, at White Rock Baptist Church, 300 Sebago Lake Road, in Gorham.

The concert wraps up a series of summer concerts at the church. A voluntary opportunity for a contribution will be available.

Alzheimer’s workshops set

In support of World Alzheimer’s Month (September) and Alzheimer’s Action Day on Sept. 21, Home Instead Senior Care is sponsoring a number of initiatives for Portland-area families affected by Alzheimer’s.

These include free workshop opportunities for family members where they will receive training to help them deal with the challenging behaviors that often result from Alzheimer’s and other dementias. The Alzheimer’s CARE: Changing Aging Through Research and Education workshops are on Saturday, Sept. 21, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., at Baxter Memorial Library, 71 South St. in Gorham; and Wednesday, Oct. 2, 4- 7 p.m., at Home Instead Senior Care Office, 502 Main Street, Gorham.

Meuse scholarship semifinalist

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. in Evanston, lll., announced recently that Gorham High School student Jason H. Meuse has been named a semi-finalist.

Meuse is one of 16,000 semifinalists in the 59th annual program for academically talented high school seniors. He will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for one of 8,000 scholarships worth about $35 million.

To become a finalist, Meuse and the high school must submit a detailed application that includes his academic record, an essay, school and community activities, leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards along with a recommendation by a high school official.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of Public Debt reported on Sept. 11 that the U.S. public debt was $16,738,546,954,446.61.
