Bon-Ton celebrated its grand opening at the Maine Mall last month by donating more than $8,000 each in opening sales to Camp Sunshine, Friends of Casco Bay and Preble Street.

New Hires, Promotions and Appointments

Cheverus High School named Thomas A. Fogarty as its new vice president for institutional advancement and alumni affairs. Fogarty joined the school’s administration earlier this month from the Crotched Mountain Foundation of Greenfield, N.H. There he was vice president of development at a leading regional rehabilitation hospital and residential special education school for children and adults with physical and emotional disabilities. He was selected by a committee from among a field of candidates that was national in scope.

Dr. Kevin Burke has joined MKM ENT Associates, a specialty practice focused on otolaryngology within Mercy Health System of Maine. Burke graduated from Georgetown University Medical School and completed his residency at the University of California, San Francisco, in otolaryngology head and neck surgery. A native of Hinsdale, Ill., Burke received his undergraduate degree from the College of the Holy Cross, in Worcester, Mass.

Lauren Mofford and Amanda Walden joined the team of health practitioners at Heart of Bath Health Center, Bath. Mofford, a licensed massage therapist, is a graduate of the Downeast School of Massage, Waldoboro. She focused on sports massage and injury prevention and had the opportunity to practice post-event massage at the Boston Marathon. Walden studied Reiki I and II under Reiki Master Martha Spruce, and now provides this treatment at Heart of Bath Health Center.

Ellen Tobias has been named vice president of technical operations at Putney Inc., a Portland pharmaceutical company focused on the development and sale of generic prescription medicines for pets. Tobias led manufacturing as vice president of Elanco Animal Health Manufacturing in Indiana when Elanco launched its companion animal health business, and sales rose from $880 million to $1.39 billion. Tobias will provide strategic leadership and execution of Putney’s global supply chain and manufacturing network.

Bernstein Shur named two shareholders to lead its data security team. Dan Mitchell, a member of the business law practice group and litigation group, has been named chairman and Joshua Silver, a member of the business law, intellectual property and technology practice groups, has been named vice chairman.

Recognition

The University of New England celebrated the 52nd Annual Deborah Morton Convocation and Awards Ceremony by inducting Eleanor Baker, CPA, managing principal of Baker Newman Noyes; Anne Lynch, executive director of The Center for Grieving Children; Lois Galgay Reckitt, executive director, Family Crisis Services and Barbara Vereault, DO, Penobscot Community Health Center. This year’s scholarship awardees are UNE nursing students Kelli Sousa and Renee Violette.

City of Bath Assessor Paul Mateosian was named the 2013 Assessor of the Year by the Maine Association of Assessing Officers at the MAAO’s annual conference. Mateosian joined the City of Bath as assessor in 1994. In addition to his responsibilities as the city’s assessor, he is also the city’s information technology manager, Bath Community Television manager and assistant city manager and has served in acting capacities as city manager, finance director and treasurer.

The Shalom House presented two Hope Awards last month to individuals making a difference in the lives of people with mental illnesses. The Johnson & Korda Innovation Award was given to Mary Allen Lindemann and Alan Spear, owners of Coffee By Design, who advocated greater workplace awareness of mental illness and made the company a “mental health-friendly employer.” Cheryl Ramsay, a family member and advocate, was given the Joseph Brannigan Community Excellence Award for her willingness to share the story of her two sons, both facing the challenges of a mental health diagnosis.

Four out of the 10 cadets from the Portland squadron of Civil Air Patrol, and 31 total cadets, were chosen by the staff to receive awards for their outstanding performance and attitude. Airman Connor Winn received the Alpha Flight Honor Cadet Award, Airman David Despins received the Bravo Flight Honor Cadet Award and Airman Eric Anton received the Encampment Honor Cadet Award. In addition, 1st Lt. Abraham Eaton, Cadet Commander of the Portland squadron, received the Distinguished Flight Staff Member Award.

The University of Southern Maine’s Stonecoast master of fine arts in creative writing program was listed among the nation’s top 10 low-residency programs for creative writing by Poets & Writers magazine. The publication represents the nation’s largest nonprofit organization serving creative writers. The ranking was based on surveys of creative writing students nationwide. When compared with other programs, Stonecoast was tied for fourth in the 2013 popularity survey and eighth in a six-year popularity study. Stonecoast also was listed as fourth in job placement.

Eleven lawyers from Perkins Thompson, P.A., located in Portland, have been selected to be included in the 2014 edition of The Best Lawyers in America. The attorneys named to the list are Timothy P.
