BATH — Volunteers here and across the country will search their communities next week for homeless people, as part of an annual “point in time” count.
The count, which will take place from 4-7 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, is required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Data submitted from the count is important in determining the level of federal funding communities receive to combat homelessness, according to a press release from the Greater Bath Homeless Initiative.
The Neighborhood Faith Community, United Church of Christ, at 150 Congress St., is inviting homeless people to take part in its weekly Neighborhood Café and then to spend the night at the church, where they will be counted. Individuals can also come to the church between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. to be included in the count.
A shuttle will be available at 210 High St., across from Plant Seafood, beginning at 4 a.m., for people needing transportation to the church. Breakfast will be served there after the count is complete at 7 a.m.
Training sessions for people interested in helping with the count will be held at the church at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28.
