Carr to speak at GOP convention

Radio talk show host and columnist Howie Carr will deliver the keynote address at the 2014 Cumberland County Republican Biennial Convention on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Westbrook Middle School, 471 Stroudwater St., Westbrook.

The event, which runs from 8 a.m.-noon, features a pancake breakfast, candidate forum, and town caucusing.

Young volunteer nominations

Kohl’s is accepting, through Friday, March 14, nominations of outstanding young volunteers for its scholarship program.

The nominations are for ages 6 to 18. Nominators must be 21 or older. The Kohl Cares Scholarship Program will award more than 2,300 young volunteers more than $400,000.

Two nominees from each of Kohl’s 1,100 stores will win a $50 gift card; nearly 200 store winners will win regional scholarships worth $1,000 toward higher education; 10 national winners will be awarded $10,000 scholarships, and Kohl’s will make $1,000 donations to non-profit organizations on the national winners’ behalf.

Valentine’s tea at Walker

The Friends of Walker Memorial Library are hosting a Valentine’s tea from 3-6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, in the event room at the library, 800 Main St.

Light snacks will be served, and the public is welcome.

The library is also selling raffle tickets for a Valentine’s Day basket. The basket includes a rug hooking kit, a Celebrations cookbook, a book by a Maine mystery author, picture frames, chocolates, a cutting board, two shopping list pads, and other items.

Raffle tickets are two for $1, or 12 for $5. The auction benefits the library. A winner will be picked during the Valentine’s Day tea program.

Celebrating Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year will be celebrated from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center, 471 Stroudwater St.

Admission is $4 for children and $6 for adults. Families of five are $20. The celebration is sponsored by the Chinese and American Friendship Association of Maine.

According to the Center’s website, the event “features heart-warming songs and dances by the children of the (Chinese and American Friendship Association of Maine) Chinese School. Nationally touring magician Norman Ng will amaze. Sparks’Ark will present live Chinese zodiac animals. Bowdoin College Professor Tsui will explain the work of China’s Nobel Prize laureate Mo Yan.”

Riverview Foundation will be offering free, 10-minute interactive martial arts classes for kids or adults from 1-1:45 p.m.
