Currently there is a plan to reverse Line 9 in Canada and the final decision will be made soon to approve or reject the project. Tar sands crude will then be able to flow from Sarnia, Ontario, to Montreal. Our Portland to Montreal pipe line is connected to Line 9 and there will be more pressure to export the tar sands out of Casco Bay. It is more important now than it has ever been to support our city government through the process of accepting an ordinance that will keep tar sands from ever coming to South Portland.

It is wonderful to see the draft ordinance committee work so well together. I am confident they will be able to write an ordinance to protect South Portland from toxic tar sands.

Tar sands are a real threat to South Portland’s air quality, land and to the people who live here.
