Children’s artist Renee Bouchard will be giving her debut performance at the Wells Public Library on Wednesday, April 23 at 10:30 a.m. She is a seacoast resident and studied music at University of New Hampshire. This is her first performance of her original work.
Thursday, April 24
North Berwick Historical Society will host a talk by author Jean Flahive, who has had a lifelong interest in the Civil War and Maine history, Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. at the D.A. Hurd Library on Route 4 in North Berwick. She is a former dean of students at Central Maine Community College and has worked as a grant writer for numerous non profits. She is the author of “Tomah Joseph’s Gift to Franklin Roosevelt,” which won the Moonbeam Gold Award for Best Multicultural Children’s Picture Book in 2009, and “The Galloping Horses of Willowbrook,” which was a finalist in the 2012 Maine Literary Awards. Flahive will be speaking about her book “Billy Boy, The Sunday Soldier of the 17th Maine,” and sharing more information she has learned about the soldier from Berwick. Members and the public are invited to attend and enjoy this talk. Refreshments will be served.
An Elephant and Piggy Party will be held at the Wells Public Library on Thursday, April 24 at 1:30 p.m. to celebrate Mo Willem’s spectacular “Elephant and Piggy” series. Staff and participants will be reading Elephant and Piggy stories, have themed snacks and create Elephant and Piggy masks. This event is free and no registration is required. A free, public viewing of “Divorce Corp,” a documentary about the abuses of families by today’s court system, will be given at the Dyer Library, Main Street in Saco, on Thursday, April 24 from 6-8 p.m. A discussion will follow with an update on the local, grassroots effort to improve Maine’s family court system. An American Red Cross Blood Drive will be hosted by the Social Justice and Peace committee of Good Shepherd Parish at St. Philip’s church hall, Route 35, Lyman, on Saturday, April 26, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. To make an appointment to donate, log on to the Red Cross website at redcrossblood.org.
The Ossipee Mountain ATV club is holding its fourth annual ATV Jamboree on April 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the MX207 track 53 Bartletts Bridge Road in Lyman. There will be mud bogging, drag racing, rodeo-style barrel racing and a relay event.
The annual spring clean up at the Scarborough marsh will take place Saturday, April 26 from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants are asked to check in at the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center on Route 9 to be assigned a work site. Groups and individuals are welcome. This annual event is a collaboration between a number of organizations including Friends of Scarborough Marsh, Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center, TogetherGreen, Town of Scarborough, Higgins Beach Association and others. Non-perishable food donations and grocery gift cards will be collected for Project G.R.A.C.E. and the local food pantry.
Party for the Pups, to benefit the dogs of Almost Home Rescue, will be held on Saturday, April 26 from 7-10 p.m. at the Dunegrass Golf Club. There will be a silent auction, music and dancing, 50/50 raffle, appetizers and desserts. For more information, go to www.almosthomerescue.net.

In observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day on April 29 at 6:15 p.m., the Wells Public Library will host a Names Reading Ceremony, videos, activities, music and readings. The theme for 2014 is “Confronting the Holocaust: American Responses.” This year marks the anniversaries of two seminal events in Holocaust history that raise questions about the responses of the United States to the widespread persecution and mass murder of the Jews of Europe. The internationally recognized date comes from the Hebrew calendar and corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on that calendar. It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising. Pre-registration is not required, but welcomed. Call 646-4565 to register.

Biddeford’s 50 Plus Club at the Ross Center will be holding its first-ever Senior Expo on April 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the J. Richard Martin Community Center Gym. The Senior Expo will be open to all members of the public, not just those 50 and over. Exhibitors will offer information on health care, insurance, wellness, personal finance, grocery, travel, real estate, recreation, home improvement and retirement planning.
