The 2014 SMAA Outdoor Track season got under way this week as the boys and girls teams from Deering, Massabesic and Gorham high schools battled the home teams at Windham High School on a breezy Monday afternoon.

Both Gorham teams finished second to Massabesic. Both Windham teams finished third.

For the Gorham girls, Kristin Benson and Taylor Currier finished 1-2 in the 200m dash. The team of Benson, Currier, Abby Perkins and Heather Woodbury won the 4×100 relay. Sophia Swiatek won the pole vault (7-0’). Hannah Southard won the triple jump (31-04) and placed second in the long jump (14-05.5). Laura Turner won the 1,600 race walk, followed by teammates Kelsey Mitchell, Sarah Flanders and Karen Knight for a 1-2-3-4 domination.

For the Windham girls, the team of Mackenzie Joy, Mattison Marcello, Lauren Shoemaker and Julia Rand won the 4×400 relay. Alexis Wintle won the girls high jump (5-0′). Lonnie Staten won the shot put (34-01.25). Ashley Boyle won the discus (85-01) followed by Staten (76-09.5).

For the Windham boys, Eric Webb won the 100 (12.39) and 200 dashes (24.95). Kyle Mandel (39-01.5) and James Wynn (35-08.5) went 1-2 in the shot put.

For the Gorham boys, Travis Grant won both the 110 (17.36) and 300 hurdles (43.40). Branden Kuusela won the pole vault (8-0’).

Mackenzie Joy runs a leg for the winning Windham Eagles in the 4×800 relay. Thomas Bradshaw runs a leg in the 4×800 relay for the second-place Gorham squad. Gorham senior Travis Grant won both the 110 (above, 17.36) and 300 hurdles (43.40). Ayla Sheets finished second in the pole vault (6-06) for Windham.Sophia Swiatek won the pole vault for Gorham (7-00).
