Pats sign LB Anderson, release Harrison
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The New England Patriots have signed veteran linebacker James Anderson and released wide receiver Mark Harrison.
Anderson started all 16 games with Chicago last year after spending his other seven NFL seasons with the Carolina Panthers. He had 102 tackles and four sacks for the Bears.
The Panthers drafted Anderson in the third round from Virginia Tech in 2006. He has started 69 of his 110 games with 556 tackles, 12 sacks, three interceptions and eight fumble recoveries. He had a franchise-record 145 tackles for Carolina in 2011.
Harrison spent last season on the Patriots reserve-non-football injury list after signing as a rookie free agent out of Rutgers last May.
Nadal, Murray advance to French semis
PARIS (AP) — Rafael Nadal rallied to advance to the French Open semifinals for the ninth time, beating David Ferrer 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, 6-1 Wednesday.
The eight-time champion at Roland Garros dropped a set at this year’s tournament for the first time, but then seemed to race through the next three to ensure he had the day off on Thursday.
Nadal will next face Andy Murray in the semifinals on Friday. Murray, who missed last year’s tournament because of a back injury, held on to beat Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 1-6, 6-0.
The tennis started late at Roland Garros on Thursday, with the two women’s quarterfinal matches only beginning after a rain delay of about three hours. Andrea Petkovic and Simona Halep both won, and one of them will be in a Grand Slam final for the first time on Saturday.
Sterling drops suit, agrees to sell Clippers
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Donald Sterling is leaving without a fight.
He is dropping his plans to sue the NBA, leaving only approval by the league’s owners for Steve Ballmer to become the new owner of the Los Angeles Clippers.
Sterling agreed Wednesday to sign off on the $2 billion sale to the former Microsoft CEO, bringing the possibility of a resolution to weeks of rumors, uncertainty and looming legal action.
The agreement hadn’t been officially signed Wednesday afternoon, according to an individual with knowledge of the negotiations who wasn’t authorized to discuss them publicly. But Donald Sterling’s attorney, Maxwell Blecher, said he “has made an agreement with the NBA to resolve all their differences.” Sterling gave his consent to a deal that was negotiated by his wife, Shelly Sterling, to sell the team, Blecher said.
Durant, LeBron named All-NBA
NEW YORK (AP) — Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant has capped his MVP season by being the lone unanimous choice to the All-NBA first team.
Durant was a first-teamer on all 125 ballots, and made the top squad for the fifth time. Miami’s LeBron James got 124 first-team votes on the way to being selected for the eighth time, while the Los Angeles Clippers’ Chris Paul earned his fourth first-team selection.
Houston’s James Harden and Chicago’s Joakim Noah are first-time first-team choices.
