PORTLAND — Incumbent Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce easily turned aside a Democratic primary challenge from Cumberland Town Councilor Michael Edes on Tuesday.

With 74 percent of county precincts in, the Bangor Daily News reported Joyce with a 7,774 to 5,205 lead, or 59 percent to 41 percent of the vote.

Joyce was first elected in 2010. Edes, a former member of the Maine State Police, was elected to the Cumberland Town Council in 2013. Joyce’s road to re-election in November is made easier by the lack of a Republican candidate.
