LIMERICK — Voters here overwhelmingly sent the message to selectmen that they don’t want the volunteer fire department to become a municipal department.
Selectmen a month ago decided to put the matter to referendum, citing difficulties with the situation as it had existed prior to the spring Town Meeting.
In the 1990s, the Limerick volunteer fire corporation formally dissolved. A month ago, selectmen, citing procedural difficulties associated with the situation, decided to ask the voters to make it a municipal department. However, after the spring Town Meeting, members formed a fire corporation.
On Tuesday, voters soundly rejected the move to make the fire department a municipal entity. In all, 437 people voted against the measure, while 247 favored it.
Town Clerk Judy LePage said the town attorney will be asked to determine next steps.
