PHIPPSBURG — On Sunday, June 15, 2014, David Carey Wallace Sr. went to be with the Lord. A lifelong lobsterman, devoted husband, loving father, doting grandfather, and treasured member of the Phippsburg community, David will be achingly missed by all who knew him. He regularly filled his “Backseat Baptist” pew at Small Point Baptist Church with a deep and everlasting love for God.

Always ready with a smile and a helping hand, David touched the lives of many both near and far. Known for giving impromptu lobstering demonstration trips, David frequently befriended curious wharf visitors and often ended up inviting them home; cooking lobster and welcoming them into the family. His sense of humor, quick wit, and off handed jokes immediately put you at ease. If David teased you, you knew you were special. His smile was infectious.

Following in the footsteps of his ancestors, David started lobstering early in life, sharing his love of the ocean with his descendants. Working in Bath Iron Works for a short period of time, David also logged, but spent the majority of his career on the water. Stories of “tuna wishing” made his eyes sparkle with delight. David’s running lights will be forever absent from the fleet when they steam out to Kettle Bottom.

Predeceased by his parents Lewis and Susan Wallace and daughter Marjorie Wallace, David leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Freda Wallace, sons David Wallace Jr. and Clinton Wallace and his wife Melanie; daughters Marita Wallace and Margaret Wallace Shaver and her husband Steven; grandchildren Stuart Richards, Amelia Elswick and her husband Michael, Charlotte Kemp, Brandon Wallace, Zane Wallace, Megan Wallace, Cynthia Ross and her husband Brandon, Anora Morton, Electra Beck, Charles Pye, Blake Pye, Brianna Pye, and Isaiah Shaver; great-grandchildren Elijah Richards, Michaela Richards, Norma Jean Richards, Asa Merrick, Chase Brewer, Rozalynn Ross, Lyric Merrick, and Ryder Ross; a brother Granville Wallace and his wife Gloria; sisters Marita Doyle and her husband Arthur, Margaret Gilliam and her husband James (Sonny), Virginia Diggory, and Rose Bowker; a multitude of nieces and nephews; and more cousins than the population of Phippsburg.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 28 at 2 p.m. at Small Point Baptist Church in Phippsburg with a reception directly after the service.
