The 17th annual Kennebunk Free Library 5k Road Race will take place this Friday, July 11, starting at 6 p.m. Registrations for runners, walkers and those in wheelchairs are now being accepted. The Kennebunk River Band will play on the library steps at the start of the race, and desserts will be provided. Dinner is free for racers who show their bib, and is open to the public. Families are invited to the Wells Reserve at Laudholm on Thursday, July 10 from 1-2 p.m. for “Flying Jewels: Dragonflies and Butterflies of Southern Maine.” The walk, led by natural resource specialist Sue Bickford, will teach participants how different habitats are important to the lives of various butterflies and dragonflies. Frank Wood of DeWolfe & Wood in Alfred will entertain and appraise antiques brought to the Thursday, July 10 meeting of the Waterborough Historical Society. The third annual Alec Cyr Fishing Tournament will kick off at a “Captain’s Party” at Aquaboggan Water park, Route 1 in Saco, on Friday, July 11 at 5:30 p.m. During this event, there will be a live auction and a wellness booth promoting the benefits of early detection for colon cancer. Participants ages 12 and up can attend “Kayaking on the Little River Estuary” at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm on Friday, July 11 from 9 a.m. to noon. A registered Maine Kayak Guide will lead the group on a paddle around a Maine estuary, watching for wildlife and learning about this treasured habitat. The Picnic in the Park Summer Concert Series, held in Sanford’s Central Park, will feature Louie Coluni on July 11. Concerts are free to the public, and take place from noon to 1 p.m. People may bring chairs or blankets and food. If it’s raining, there will be no concert.

The annual Greek Festival at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 186 Bradley St. in Saco, will be July 11-13. The festival features traditional Greek foods and pastries, as well as cultural events including dancing and singing.

A program on the mammals, fish and birds of Vaughan Woods Memorial State Park will be offered on Saturday, July 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A bird banding lecture will be offered at 11 a.m. with bird expert June Ficker, followed by a guided tour of the park. A large group date for the program will be Tuesday, July 15, same time with lecturer. RSVPs required. Vaughan Woods Memorial State Park is located at 28 Oldsfield Road, South Berwick.

The fourth annual Break the Sound Barrier motorcycle run is set for Saturday, July 12, hosted by The Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association, an international association, which is raising awareness and funds for children with hearing loss in Maine. Starting and ending at the Eagles Club in Waterboro, the motorcycle run will benefit Hear ME Now, an auditory oral education center for children and adults with hearing loss. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with kickstands up at 10 a.m.

The Wells Reserve at Laudholm will provide a free bird walk on Saturday, July 12 from 7:30-9:30 a.m., where participants will join a birder from York County Audubon to look and listen for the many kinds of birds found in the summer in the area. A giant yard sale benefiting two nonprofits, Outta The Box Thrift Boutique and The New School, will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 38 York Street in Kennebunk.

A bean supper will be held at First Parish Congregational Church on July 12 from 5-6:30 p.m. The church is located at the corner of Beach and Main streets in Saco.

St. Augustine of Canterbury Anglican Church is holding its fourth annual bottle drive on Saturday, July 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 156 Saco Ave., Old Orchard Beach at Cathedral Pines Chapel parking lot. Proceeds from the drive will be used to benefit the homeless and others in need. At this time of year, specific items such as socks, flip-flops and sunscreen are in demand but often overlooked by donors. Funds will be used to purchase essential items for those in need. The bottle drive is part of the on-going bottle drive held by the parish.

Grandpa’s Garage Big Yard and Bake Sale will take place on Saturday, July 12 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the West Kennebunk United Methodist Church at 160 Alfred Road. A hot dog lunch will be available. For more information, call 985-6632.

The Lyman Republican Committee will meet on Saturday, July 12 at 10 a.m. at the Community Library in Goodwin’s Mills. All registered Lyman Republicans and undeclared voters are welcome.

Moxie Day at the Seashore Trolley Museum is Sunday, July 13. The New England Moxie Congress comes to the museum to hold its annual meeting, and with that comes plenty of activity. Detective Bill Vachon from the York County Sheriff’s Office will present a forensic science program for students in grades 6-12 at the Kennebunk Free Library Tuesday, July 15 at 1 p.m. Forensic science involves collecting evidence at the scene of a crime and using scientific knowledge to piece together exactly what happened there. Collecting forensic evidence involves dusting for fingerprints, examining hair and clothing fibers, analyzing blood spatter patterns, administering lie detector tests, and using sniffer dogs.
