BOOTHBAY — Local and national- known sports legends and Hall of Famers are making arrangements to meet in Boothbay for the 24th annual Boothbay Charities Classic Golf Tournament, which includes a lobster bake and a sports auction.

The event is scheduled to take place Sept. 26-27, with all proceeds benefiting Special Olympics Maine.

The festivities begin on Sept. 26 with a New England lobster and clam bake with the participating celebrities. The general public is welcome to purchase tickets for the lobster bake. Call Brenda Blackman at 633-6280 for more information. Chicken is also available.

A silent sports auction will be available for public viewing and bidding from 4-7 p.m. at the Railway Village Meeting Hall, with the public able to mingle with the attending celebrities. The sports auction is open to the public at no charge. Donations for the auction are being accepted. Contact Tom Erskine at 633-6103.

Some of the items already donated include an autographed baseball bat signed by former Boston Red Sox Jim Rice, an autographed David Ortiz jersey from the 2007 World Series, an autographed jersey from NFL Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith, an autographed football signed by two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin and an autographed hockey jersey from former Boston Bruins captain Ray Bourque.

Celebrities attending the 2014 tournamentinclude Bob Allietta of California Angels and Cleveland Indians; Bob Capadona of the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills; Ken Hodge from the Boston Bruins; Peter Ladd, Stump Merrill, Steve Minich, Dott Petty, Scott Price, Oakland Raider Otis Sistrunk, Tom Stephens, Pittsburgh Steelers player Robin Cole, John Kameisha, Dave O’Brien from the Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants and St. Louis Cardinals, Don Marcotte, Wayne Soares, Roger Wehrli, Butch Byrd, Gerhard Schwedes, Gino Cappaletti and Pete Banaszak. Team openings and limited individual golfer positions are available for Saturday’s golf tournament, which includes guaranteed pairing with a celebrity, a goodie bag provided by tournament sponsors and a seat at the lobster bake and sports auction. Special Olympics Maine is a year-round athletic training and competition program for children and adults with intellectual disabilities of all ages. In Maine, there are 3,800 athletes who participate in the program.
