Giving Back

Patriot Insurance Co., of Yarmouth, recently awarded college scholarships totaling $62,000 to nine Maine high school graduates. Local recipients include Dana Hayward of North Yarmouth, Benjamin Martin of Falmouth and Matthew Swan of Portland, who are all attending the University of Southern Maine. Other winners attend the University of Maine at Orono, Thomas College, St. Joseph’s College and Central Maine Community College. Patriot has provided scholarships to Maine business students since 2009.

New Hires, Promotions and Appointments

Elizabeth Riotte, a native of Yarmouth and graduate of North Yarmouth Academy, has joined the Portland law firm of Verrill Dana. She previously served with a firm in Cleveland, and holds a law degree from Case Western Reserve University. Riotte’s practice will focus on securities law, corporate governance and related matters.

Winxnet, a Portland-based information technology company, has hired Doug Butler, of Harpswell, as a lead application developer. He previously held software development positions with the MEMIC Group, Computer Sciences Corp. and Alliance Data Systems.

John F. Moloney, a physician who is board-certified in cardiology, has joined Mercy Health System. He brings over 20 years experience to Mercy’s cardiology practice, and holds a medical degree from the University of Massachusetts. He completed an internship, residency and fellowship at Maine Medical Center.

Kevin Fletcher and Tom Prouty have joined the staff of Malone Commercial Brokers, a Portland-based real estate firm. Fletcher, who has been involved in commercial real estate since 1997, specializes in investment and income-producing properties. Prouty, who was first licensed as a broker in 1984, joins the firm as its chief operating officer.

Portland Buy Local, a 500-member supporting locally owned, independent businesses, has named Brett Wagenheim as its new ambassador. A Portland resident, she holds a bachelor’s degree in history and business management from Colby College.

Morgan Stanley Wealth Management recently promoted two members of its Portland office. James Gribbel has been named a senior portfolio management director and financial adviser. Jay Cross has been named a portfolio management director and financial adviser.

Recognition

The University of New England has named four women as recipients of its 2014 Deborah Morton Society Award. The recipients, to be honored at a Sept. 16 ceremony on the school’s Portland campus, are Brenda C. Garrand, chief executive officer of marketing agency Garrand; Kathleen A. Mazzuchelli, former Caribou parks superintendent; Barbara A. Rice McDade, director of the Bangor Public Library; and Rachel Talbot Ross, civil rights leader and president of the NAACP, Portland Branch. The award recognizes women with strong ties to Maine who have combined career achievement with a record of public service, or who have provided exceptional volunteer leadership in civic, cultural or social causes. More than 180 women have received the award over the past 53 years, including Margaret Chase Smith, May Sarton and Joan Benoit Samuelson.

Dave Scheffler, of the Coldwell Banker real estate office in Cape Elizabeth, has been named the agency’s August Broker of the Month. Sheffler has over 29 years experience in real estate.

Michael Moore, of Bigelow Investment Advisors, a financial planning firm in Portland, has earned the designation of chartered financial analyst. A Cape Elizabeth resident, Moore serves as vice president and investment advisor with the firm.
