FREEPORT — Virginia M. Higgins, 91, a resident of Lisbon, passed away at the Freeport Nursing and Rehabilitation facility on Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, where she was a patient for a short time.

She was born in Columbus, OH, on Feb. 17, 1923, the daughter of the late Robert and Anna (Burgess) Sigman. Virgina attended schools in Columbus.

She and her husband Owen Patrick ( Pat) moved to Maine in the summer of 1952. He was stationed at Brunswick Naval Air Station. Her interests included reading, jigsaw puzzles, Red Sox baseball and traveling. She was ready for any trip at any time. She was a regular attendee of the Lisbon United Methodist Church. In recent years, she particularly enjoyed attending the Widow’s Group and Afternoon Circle of the Lisbon United Methodist Church. She will be sadly missed, especially for her sense of humor.

Virginia is survived by her son John Higgins and his wife Dolores of Waldorboro; her daughter Patricia H. Cavender and her husband Clyde of Lisbon Falls; her grandchildren, Brian Higgins and his wife Tracey of Wyoming, Shawn Higgins and his wife Holly of Damariscotta, Jonica Palmer of Bristol, James Goss and his wife Lisa of Lisbon, Kimberly Dill and her husband Mark of South Carolina, Kelley Cavender of Florida, Stephanie Carey and Jim of Stetson, Robert Anthony and his wife Maryanne of Yarmouth. She also leaves behind 20 great-grandchildren and two great-greatgrandchildren; her niece Norma of London, OH, a nephew Charles Sigman of Florida and two greatnephews Richard and Robert Gray and their families of Ohio. She will also be greatly missed by her beloved friend, confidant and travel buddy, Virginia Tardiff of West Bowdoin.

She was predeceased by her loving husband Owen (Pat) on Feb. 12, 1979, her brother Charles, a sister-in-law, Dorothy and her husband, Marion Gray; sister-in-law Nota Higgins, three nephews, Robert Sigman and Richard and Robert Gray and two nieces, Carolyn Piper and Joyce Sigman and a greatnephew Terry Gray.

The family would like to express their deepest thanks to her cardiologist of 21 years, Dr. Scott Mills, her primary care physician, Dr. Brian Knighton, and their staffs for their compassion and care. In addition, our thanks to the doctors, nurses and CNA’s of C-2 at St. Mary’s Hospital for their excellent care of mom during her last couple of weeks. Our family also thanks the residents of Woodside Apartments, where mom resided for 21 years, for sharing their friendships. A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 12:30 p.m. at the Lisbon United Methodist Church in Lisbon Falls. Interment will be at New Harbor Cemetery in Bristol. Those wishing, in lieu of flowers, may make a charitable contribution in her memory to a favorite charity of choice.
