
She was born April 17, 1926, in Linwood, PA, a daughter of Clara Francis Martine. She later moved to Brandywine Hundred, DE, with her mother and sisters where she grew up and spent most of her life. She was a graduate of Wilmington HS, class of 1944. At the age of 17, she was employed by the Dupont Company in Wilmington, DE. Working in the secretarial pool, she obtained the security clearance required to perform clerical work on the Manhattan Project.
She married Robert Fulmer Sr. on Jan. 15, 1949, in Brandywine Hundred, DE. Elizabeth was passionate about literature, poetry and history. While living in Delaware, she was active in the Chester Bethel United Methodist Church, singing in the choir and writing a monthly church history newsletter column. She was employed by the Brandywine School District as the secretary to the Superintendent of Schools. She and her husband retired to Cundy’s Harbor, Maine, in 1995.
Throughout her life in Maine, Elizabeth was an active member of First Parish Church, Brunswick, involved in the music program and singing in the choir for many years. She also enjoyed volunteering in the pharmacy at Parkview Hospital, Brunswick, for the past 19 years.
Although her given name was Elizabeth, she was affectionately known as “Hitty” to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As a beloved grandmother and greatgrandmother, she derived her greatest joy from time spent with the children. Among friends and family, her baking skills were legendary. She thoroughly enjoyed her home in Cundy’s Harbor and challenged herself daily with both crossword and jigsaw puzzles.
Her husband passed in 2012 and Elizabeth is also predeceased by a sister, Peggy Lossien.
She is survived by a son, Robert Fulmer Jr. and his partner Kathy Casagrande of Freeport, ME; a daughter, Barabara Raught of Claymont, DE; a brother, Michael Pennington and his wife Marguerite of Wilmington, DE; a sister, Lola Simon and her husband Pete Sr. of Wilmington, DE; grandchildren, Kristen Dow and her husband Richard of Topsham, ME, Matthew Fulmer of Pownal, ME and Elizabeth Green, Sarah Marlowe, Rebecca Raught, all of Claymont, DE. She also enjoyed her ten great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014, at First Parish Church, Brunswick, with the Rev. Mary Baard officiating.
