Auditions Monda for ‘WFCP Telethon’
Freeport Players will hold auditions Monday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m., at Freeport Performing Arts Center, 30 Holbrook St., Freeport, for the upcoming production, “WFCP Telethon.”
Freeport Players will be seeking actors to portray a wide variety of characters using character voices, accents and celebrity impressions. To audition, show up at the Performing Arts Center between 7-8 p.m., ready to pretend to be someone else. Sample silly dialogues or monologues will be provided to read for the directors.
“WFCP Telethon,” which will be performed Dec. 5, 6 and 7, is a spoof of telethons and pledge drives, complete with variety acts, phone bank volunteers and earnest pleas for support.
Variety acts are also being sought for the production. Jugglers, singers, dancers, bands, mimes, contortionists, comedians, musicians, unicyclists, vaudevillians, ventriloquists and more who would like to perform in the production should contact Elizabeth at [email protected] to sign up for an audition time on Oct. 27.
Community band invites new members
The Coastal Winds, Freeport’s community concert band, has begun rehearsing for the 2014-2015 concert season and is inviting new members.
Rehearsals are on Tuesdays, 6:30-8 p.m., in the Pine Tree Academy band room, 67 Pownal Road, Freeport. The band is conducted by Brendan Krueger, instrumental band teacher and principal at Pine Tree Academy.
Coastal Winds is made up of adult players and accomplished students from many communities and is active from September through July, giving concerts in local venues in December, the spring and early summer. All instruments are welcome, but the band is in particular need of clarinets, French horns, and percussion players. The repertoire is varied, from classical to popular. Fall fundraisers at FHS
Students at Freeport High School are selling holiday items to raise money for their class expenses, including the prom, Senior Week and Project Graduation. Items will be available for sale at the polls on Election Day or students can be contacted directly. Seniors are selling citrus fruits. Juniors are selling wreaths and swags. Last chance for pumpkin hayrides
The last weekend pumpkin hayride scheduled for Wolfe’s Neck Farm is Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 25-26, with hayrides leaving on the hour from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Visitors can learn about the life cycle of pumpkins and pick out their favorite to take home. Pumpkin hayrides cost $6 per person ages 4 and older, with ages 3 and under free, and include one small pumpkin for each paid admission. Proceeds benefit Wolfe’s Neck Farm’s educational programs.
Other attractions at the farm include the hay maze for young children, barn animals, bicycle rentals and the farm stand stocked with seasonal vegetables and cuts of pasture-raised lamb.
Election, ballot info
On Nov. 4, the polls will be open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. in the gymnasium at Freeport High School, 30 Holbrook St. The election will have many elements on the ballot.

Election Day bake sale
The Freeport Woman’s Club is having its fifth annual Election Day benefit bake sale on Nov. 4 at Freeport High School, just outside the voting area. Proceeds support the organization’s Step-Up Grant for a woman needing help with education to improve or procure a new job. The club’s specialty is homemade pies, but many other baked items will be at their table.
Food scrap composting offered
Freeport residents visiting the Hedgehog Mountain Road transfer facility can now compost their food scraps free of charge. Food scraps can be brought in a separate bucket or container to the transfer facility and dropped into the designated compost totes. The food waste will be collected by a local food waste collection and composting company, “We Compost It!” The converted compost is donated to local Freeport schools, as well as restaurants, hospitality and health-care facilities throughout southern Maine.
Acceptable food scraps include meat, fish, fruits, vegetables, eggshells, paper napkins, coffee grounds, rice, pasta, bread and baked goods. For more information, contact the Freeport Transfer Station at 865-3740.
Tea tasting Nov. 1

Freeport free movie day
Freeport residents are invited to enjoy a film at the Nordica Theatre for free on Wednesday, Nov. 5. Proof of residence in the form of a license, ID or school ID is required to receive a free ticket to any available showtime. Tickets are limited to seating capacity and there will be no rain checks. Donations will be accepted to benefit the Freeport Players.
Ghosts of Freeport’s Past
Freeport Historical Society is sponsoring a series of supernatural after-dark programs, Ghosts of Freeport’s Past, at Woodlawn Cemetery, West Street, with the help of Freeport Players.
In the dark hours of Oct. 24, 25, 29 and 30, the members of the Freeport Players will be bringing some of the ghosts of Freeport’s past back to life. Small groups will visit the graves of some of Freeport’s most notable residents, where their reincarnations will share tales of their lives. Continuous tours will last 45 minutes starting at 6 p.m., with the last tour beginning at approximately 7:15.
Woodlawn Cemetery is the resting place of some of Freeport’s most prominent past residents including shipbuilders, industrialists, maritime captains, clergy and others whose stories are fascinating.
Since the tours will take place on uneven ground, there will be no admittance without a flashlight. Participants should also dress for the outdoors. Reservations are urged as previous year’s tours have all sold out. The fee is $10 for adults and $5 for historical society members and children 12 and under. Coffee house anniversary
The Open Stage Coffee House will observe its 10th anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m., in the Community Room of the Freeport Community Library.
The coffee house has been a place for musicians, storytellers and poets to perform in an informal space. Participants can sign up as they enter the room and should limit performances to 10 minutes or two songs, whichever is less. A birthday cake, baked by Shari Broder, and beverages will be shared by all for free. Throughout the evening, between acts, folks will be invited to reminisce about their favorite experience at the coffee house.

Trivia Challenge coming soon
The Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce will be holding its second annual Freeport Trivia Challenge on Thursday, Nov. 6, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Freeport Grill, 175 Lower Main St. Trivia master Cole Tamminen will again be the emcee for the event.
Teams of four can enter for $150. The winning team receives $200 cash. General questions will be interspersed with those about Freeport’s past and present. There will be door prizes and free light snacks.

Black and Orange Ball
The Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce will host a Black and Orange Ball costume party and auction on Friday, Oct. 24, starting at 6:30 p.m., at the Freeport Grill, 975 Lower Main St. The event will include a costume contest, music and karaoke. Health management workshops
Living Well for Better Health, a nationally recognized organization, will offer a six-week workshop that will help give the tools to help manage ongoing health challenges. The workshop will be held Tuesdays, from 1-3:30 p.m., Nov. 4-Dec. 16, at Casco Bay YMCA, 14 Old South Freeport Road.
Participants learn real-life skills to live a rewarding life while managing their health. The interactive workshop will help participants to deal with frustration, fatigue and other emotions. Bean supper at Grange
The last public baked bean supper of the season will be held at the Harraseeket Grange Hall, 13 Elm St., in Freeport, Saturday, Oct. 25, from 5-6 p.m. The all-you-can-eat menu includes three kinds of home-baked beans – pea, yellow-eye and red kidney – hot,dogs, biscuits, brown bread, potato salad, pasta salad, cole slaw, homemade pies and beverages. Halloween party at the Y
The Casco Bay Branch of YMCA of Southern Maine will hold a free Halloween party Friday, Oct. 24, from 6-8 p.m.
The event will feature spooky games, Halloween crafts and treats, a moon bounce, dance party, fortune teller and an interactive haunted trail. Children can come in costume and are asked to bring a donation of non-perishable food or personal care items for the Yarmouth Community Food Pantry, which supports residents of Freeport, Yarmouth, Pownal, Cumberland and North Yarmouth. Volunteers sought for trail building
Wolfe’s Neck Farm invites volunteers to lend a hand as they improve their trail network and build new trails through their property. Doll raffle
Members of the Freeport Elders are raffling an 18-inch American Girl Doll named Isabelle, with 10 outfits and a wooden bed. Tickets are $2 each ticket or three for $5. Candidates forum
A Maine Senate District 24 candidate forum will be held Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m., in the Brunswick Town Council chambers, 85 Union St. The district comprises Brunswick, Freeport, Harpswell, Pownal and North Yarmouth. Candidates are Stan Gerzofsky, incumbent Democrat; Fred Horch, Green; and Jennifer Johnson, Republican.
