PORTLAND (AP) — Fishery regulators are looking for proposals to support scientific studies about the conversation of river herring.
The interstate Atlantic States Marines Fisheries Commission is providing funding for proposals to gather data to measure the performance of fish passage improvement projects. The commission is also accepting proposals about habitat restoration, dam-related herring mortality, and the impacts of fisheries on river herring. Other potential projects include documentation of the life history of the marine phase of river herring and reviews of contaminant effects on freshwater ecosystems.
Proposals are due by 5 p.m. on Thursday.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
