Taveras drunk at time of fatal crash

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals rookie outfielder Oscar Taveras was drunk at the time of his fatal car crash last month in his Caribbean homeland, an official in the Dominican Republic said.

Tessie Sanchez, a spokeswoman for the Dominican attorney general’s office, told The Associated Press toxicology reports showed Taveras had a blood-alcohol level five times the country’s legal limit when he lost control of his car Oct. 26 on a highway in the tourist region of Puerto Plata.

Pirates trade for Yankees’ Cervelli

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired catcher Francisco Cervelli from the New York Yankees in exchange for left-handed reliever Justin Wilson.

Mainly a backup with the Yankees, the 28-year-old Cervelli batted .301 with two homers and 13 RBIs in 49 games last season.

The Pirates could have an opening at catcher if they are unable to re-sign Russell Martin, a free agent who declined the team’s $15.3 million qualifying offer after helping Pittsburgh to consecutive playoff berths.

Blake Griffin facing battery charge

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Los Angeles Clippers star Blake Griffin is facing a misdemeanor battery charge stemming from a scuffle with a man at a Las Vegas Strip nightclub, according to court records.

The 25-year-old Griffin is due for arraignment Dec. 8 before a Las Vegas justice of the peace on a charge that could get him up to six months in jail if he is convicted. The criminal complaint was filed Friday, and a summons was issued for his appearance in court.

Ducks’ pair dealing with mumps

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Ducks veterans Corey Perry and Francois Beauchemin have been diagnosed with mumps.

Beauchemin has been hospitalized to receive intravenous fluids, but he has improved, Anaheim medical director Craig Milhouse said. Perry has been cleared of the disease and is free to resume working out Thursday.

Perry missed his fourth consecutive game, and Beauchemin sat out his second straight when the Ducks hosted the Los Angeles Kings.

Prospect McDavid out with hand injury

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — The NHL’s next big thing is dealing with a hand injury that will sideline him for at least a month.

Junior hockey star Connor McDavid fractured a bone in his right hand while playing for the Erie Otters on Tuesday night and will miss five to six weeks.

McDavid, likely the top pick in next year’s NHL Draft, hurt the hand while taking a swing at Bryson Cianfrone of the Mississauga Steelheads. The 17-year-old leads the Ontario Hockey League with 16 goals and 35 assists in 18 games.
