I never thought I’d find myself fully agreeing with one of Al Diamon’s “Politics And Other Mistakes” columns, but his Nov. 20 piece on how Maine selects its attorney general was spot-on and entertaining.

His idea of choosing the state’s top lawyer the same way Maine selects its judges – the governor nominates a candidate for a single seven-year term, the nominee is vetted by a legislative committee, and the state Senate votes – is practical, thorough, and non-partisan. This a big improvement on the current system of letting the majority party in the Legislature do the choosing, and better than the governor’s proposal to have the voters directly choose the AG. All it takes to make this happen is an amendment to Maine’s state constitution.

I will be contacting my legislators before the week is out to ask them to support such an amendment, and I hope others will do the same.

Well done, Mr. Diamon, and keep the “lame political metaphors” coming – while you’re making your readers laugh, you’re also making us think!
