PORTLAND — Wanda Lee Sturtevant, 62, died Dec. 18 after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by her family.

She was born Nov. 11, 1952, and grew up in Portland. She graduated from Deering High School and later from the Mercy Hospital School of Radiologic Technology.

After her children were grown, Sturtevant earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Southern Maine and the University of New England. She then dedicated over 20 years to social work, helping individuals with drug and alcohol addiction.

Sturtevant loved spending time with family and close friends, and took great pride in raising her children. She was known for her sense of humor, and for the caring and compassion she brought to her work.

Sturtevant is survived by her three children: Albert Aeed, his wife Emily and their sons Miles and Owen; Kate Axelsen Foster, her husband Todd and their son Eli; and Hans Axelsen. She is also survived by her mother, Freida Chase and her husband Richard; siblings Gary Sturtevant and his partner Deb Towle, Donna Casey and her husband Richard, and Michael Sturtevant and his wife Tracy; nieces Kim Raymond and Megan Gooch; and nephew Kevin Sturtevant.

She was predeceased by her father, Donald Sturtevant.

Visiting hours were held Sunday at Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, in Portland, and a memorial service took place there Monday.
