RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Eric Staal doesn’t often take part in the shootout.

But the Carolina Hurricanes captain made the most of his chance Sunday, beating Tuukka Rask for the only shootout goal in a 2-1 victory.

It was Staal’s fifth shootout goal in 20 attempts. Four of those goals have decided the game, including Sunday’s, to give Carolina a two-game winning streak.

“I haven’t had my name called a ton in that regard, but if I keep doing that, it will be called,” Staal said. “You have to go out confident and be excited for the opportunity, and today I was. I’ve been shooting it well the last few games. Today, I didn’t have it in regulation but (had) a lot of good chances. Rask made some saves, but I got the better of him in the shootout.”

Anton Khudobin got the start in goal for Carolina in place of Cam Ward, who had played the previous four games. Khudobin, a former Bruin, made 19 saves and stopped Reilly Smith, Torey Krug and Patrice Bergeron in the shootout.

The Bruins have just five regulation wins in their past 16 games to fall to 19-15-6.

They were outshot 14-4 in the first period and 9-2 in the third. Bergeron, the Boston captain, said the team needed more of a sense of desperation.

“We’re halfway in, and we’re not in the playoffs,” Bergeron said. “It’s definitely unacceptable.”

Carolina took the lead into the first intermission with a late goal. Patrick Dwyer stuck a rebound past Rask (35 saves) with 33.2 seconds left for his third of the season on assists by Brad Malone and Jay McClement.

Bergeron tied it for Boston, one-timing a pass from Brad Marchand past Khudobin with 5:25 left in the second period. Dougie Hamilton also had an assist on Bergeron’s goal, his eighth of the season.

In the final minute of the second period, Boston’s Smith had an open net after a nifty pass from David Krejci, but Smith hit the post to keep the score tied at the second intermission.

The Bruins were held without a shot for nearly the first 17 minutes, but their first shot nearly was a goal. Smith was alone in front of the net but robbed by Khudobin. Midway through the second period, Khudobin handcuffed Smith on another attempt from close range.

The Hurricanes killed off one penalty that spanned the first and second periods, giving them 20 consecutive penalty kills.

Khudobin has won consecutive starts. He was 0-8-2 before winning 2-1 on Dec. 23 at New Jersey.

BLACKHAWKS 5, STARS 4, OT

CHICAGO (AP) — Patrick Sharp scored 1:17 into overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks a win over Dallas and snap the Stars’ four-game winning streak.

Sharp drove past Jason Spezza down the slot, took Duncan Keith’s feed from the left point and beat Kari Lehtonen with a shot that slipped between the goalie’s body and his blocker.

Chicago’s Brad Richards fooled Lehtonen with an improbable sharp-angle shot with 3:57 left in the third period to tie it at 4 and set up overtime.

Brandon Saad, Patrick Kane and Bryan Bickell scored for the Blackhawks, who came back from four one-goal deficits to win.

BLUE JACKETS 4, AVALANCHE 3

DENVER (AP) — David Savard drove in shot from just inside the blue line with 1:01 left in the third period, lifting the Columbus Blue Jackets past the Colorado Avalanche.

Savard, whose turnover early in the game led to a goal for Colorado, was able to get enough on the puck to knock it past Semyon Varlamov for the Blue Jackets’ fifth win in their last six road games.

Brandon Dubinsky scored a pair of goals for the Blue Jackets, and Ryan Johansen and added a goal.

Colorado scored its quickest goal of the season when Jarome Iginla intercepted a wayward pass by Savard in the Blue Jackets’ zone and wristed a shot past Curtis McElhinney 30 seconds into the game.

LIGHTNING 4, SENATORS 2

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Tyler Johnson had two goals and Nikita Kucherov had two assists to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning past the Ottawa Senators.

The Lightning took a 3-2 lead into the third period and increased that to 4-2 at the 7:58 mark on Johnson’s second goal of the game.

The Lightning also got goals from Victor Hedman, who also had an assist, and Steven Stamkos. Ben Bishop made 20 saves and improved to 6-0-2 against his former team.

Ottawa got a goal and an assist from Kyle Turris, along with another goal from Mark Stone, but had its two-game winning streak end.

DUCKS 4, PREDATORS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Francois Beauchemin scored the tying goal with 2:17 left in the third period and Ryan Kesler got the deciding goal in the shootout, giving the Anaheim Ducks a victory over the Nashville Predators.

Matt Beleskey and Corey Perry also had goals in regulation for the league-leading Ducks, and Frederik Andersen made 27 saves.

Seth Jones and Craig Smith had power-play goals in the second period and Mattias Ekholm also scored for the Predators. Backup goalie Carter Hutton stopped 30 shots, but remained winless in five starts this season — all on the road.

OILERS 5, ISLANDERS 2

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Matt Hendricks scored a pair of goals and the Edmonton Oilers topped the New York Islanders.

Jordan Eberle, Derek Roy and Matt Fraser also scored for the Oilers, who won for just the third time in their last 25 games. Edmonton, however, improved to 2-0-2 in its last four games since interim head coach Todd Nelson took sole possession of the Oilers’ bench, with general manager Craig MacTavish moving back upstairs.

Johnny Boychuk and Brock Nelson scored for the Islanders, whose three-game winning streak ended. New York is 7-2-1 in its last 10.
