LYMAN — A free, facilitated book discussion group at the Community Library will begin this month, thanks to the Maine Humanities Council.

The library was selected by the Maine Humanities Council to offer the “Let’s Talk About It” reading and discussion program.

The first session will be held on Jan. 21, at 6 p.m., to discuss “The Maine Woods,” by Henry David Thoreau, said librarian Leila Roy. The themed series will continue through four more sessions ending April 15, said Roy.

Other books to be discussed are “We Took to the Woods,” by Louise Dickinson Rich; “Campfires Rekindled,” by George S. Kephart; “Fly Rod Crosby,” by A. Hunter; and “Wilderness from Chamberlain Farm,” by Dean Bennett.

The discussions will be facilitated by Michael Bachem, a retired professor with a background in comparative literature, said Roy.

The library has several copies of the books for those who are interested, which can be checked out like any other library book, said Roy. For more information on the program, stop by the library or call 499-7114.

Roy said she’s seen the “Let’s Talk About It” program at other libraries.

“It’s a really wonderful program,” said Roy. “I’m excited to have it here.”

The facilitator and the books are provided by the Maine Humanities Council, through a grant from the Belvedere Fund of the Maine Community Foundation.

“We find that there is great interest among adults in getting together to discuss what they’ve read with others,” said Maine Humanities Council “Let’s Talk About It” Director Lizz Sinclair in a written statement.

She said that having a discussion leader like Bachem deepens that experience.
