The American Red Cross asks eligible blood donors to make a resolution to give blood regularly in 2015, beginning with National Blood Donor Month in January.

National Blood Donor Month recognizes the importance of giving blood and platelets while honoring those who roll up a sleeve to help patients in need. It has been observed during January since 1970, and that’s no coincidence. Winter is an especially difficult time to collect enough blood to meet patient needs. Eligible donors with all types are needed, especially those with O negative, A negative and B negative.

Upcoming blood donation drives include:

. Jan. 6, 2015 — from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the L.L. Bean Retail Store, located at 95 Main St. in Freeport

. Jan. 7, 2015 — from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Dunkin Donuts, located at 583 Lisbon Road in Lisbon Falls

. Jan. 7, 2015 — from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Seventh Day Adventist Church, located at 333 Maine St. in Brunswick

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

To donate, download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call (800) 733- 2767 to make an appointment or for more information.
