WESTBROOK – Built in 1930, this classic Craftsman home belonged to the same family for its first 76 years, and for many decades was the center of a 13-acre farm. Today, the lot conveniently close (but not too close) to U.S. Route 302 is still sizeable (.70 acre); and the house, sitting well back from Brook Street, makes a perfect family home.

Which is what it has been these past few years, since the sellers completed a full furnace-to-roof updating, remodeling with great care to preserve vintage features while also ensuring modern comforts. Here’s a perfect example: The replacement windows are 2-over-1 pane, just like the originals.

So in addition to great period character and charm, the home has the added advantages of being in move-in condition, and being offered at an eminently affordable asking price of $239,900.

The most eye-catching upgrade is the lovely kitchen, with its honed granite counters, cool subway-tile backsplashes, farmer’s sink, crown moldings and stainless appliances including Frigidaire professional gas range. The first floor flows very nicely: Off a double door from the kitchen is the formal dining room, which has a beautiful built-in china closet, and opens through French doors to the two-level wraparound deck (note its scalloped stairs); the wide hallway from the kitchen leads past a half-bath with fixtures brought down from the renovated second-floor bath, into a good-sized den or bonus room.

The living room is across the mahogany-inlay foyer and has a brick fireplace and hearth with wood-burning insert. Running along the front of the south-facing house, the three-season enclosed porch enjoys wonderful sun and warmth.

Up wide stairs, there are bedrooms back-and-front on the east side, and a stellar office with built-ins – yet another example of the home’s handsome woodwork – in the center. Spacious full bath with soaking tub, and two-closet master bedroom are on the west side. In the front closet is a staircase to the attic, which has good headroom and excellent potential for finishing.

The basement houses laundry, has a fine and spacious workshop area, and a separate room originally used for. The detached two-vehicle garage has walk-up storage, too.

The home at 58 Brook St., Westbrook is listed for sale at $239,900 by Danny Reali of Reali Realty in Portland.
