PHIPPSBURG — Gilbert (Gilly, Gil) C. Robinson, 77, of Main Road, formerly of Bath, left this world peacefully in the loving arms of his wife and daughter on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015.

He was born in Framingham, MA, on June 7, 1937, the son of Philip M. and Gladys McGee Robinson.

Gil graduated from Morse High School of Bath, Maine, in 1956 where he excelled in track and field and held the record for the one-mile run. He was presented with a Machinists Manual from Hyde Windlass Company for high achievements in machine shop and guaranteed a position upon graduation.

Upon graduating, he enlisted in the United States Air Force from 1956-59 and traveled to many distant lands. He had fond memories of North Africa and had many a tale to tell. Being a machinist by trade and while serving his country in peacetime, he was in charge of keeping the aircraft in top working order.

After returning from the U.S.A.F., he started his position of employment with Hyde Windlass Company, later Bath Iron Works, which he held proudly for 45 years retiring in 2001.

He joined the Bath Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter on May 1, 1959. He loved the fire department and over the course of his tenure, earned the rank of Lieutenant on Engine 2, and finally, Captain of Engine 4. He was able to travel to Cascais, Portugal, a sister fire department of Bath, and assisted with programs teaching children fire safety in schools as well as training the firemen updated firefighting procedures. He retired from the fire department in December of 2003 after 35 years or service.

Gilbert is survived by his wife of 43 years Martha L. Robinson (née Robinson) of Phippsburg and one daughter Maria E. O’Connell, also of Phippsburg. His sister Patricia A. Mangione, his brother Philip (Wayne) W. Robinson, several nieces and nephews and two great nieces and three great nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Philip M. and Gladys McGee Robinson and an infant son Gilbert Clifford Robinson.

Visiting hours will be Friday, Feb. 6, 2 to 4 p.m. at David E. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home in Bath, Maine. A memorial service will also be held at 4 p.m. with a reception to be announced following the service.
