HIDALGO, Texas — The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (17-15) topped the Maine Red Claws (21-11) 110-95 Thursday night at State Farm Arena. The Vipers own the all-time series versus Maine 13-1.
Houston Rockets assignee Clint Capela led the Vipers with 19 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks. Jaron Johnson added 16 points. Travis Bader also scored 16 points and shot 5-for-9 from three-point range. Toure’ Murry tallied 14 points and Tony Bishop scored 13 points.
Maine was led by Ralph Sampson with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jason Calliste also added 14 points. Chris Babb notched 12 points. Christian Watford and Romero Osby each scored 11 points.
The score was tied four times during the first quarter until a 3-point shot from Glen Rice, Jr. gave the Vipers a 28-25 advantage. The Vipers held the lead throughout the remainder of the game. With less than a minute remaining in the first quarter, a jump shot from Nick Johnson started a 14-0 run that continued until the 8:04 mark in the second quarter. At halftime, RGV led 65-47.
The Red Claws outscored the Vipers 24-20 in the third quarter. At the end of the third, Maine trailed 85-71. RGV maintained control throughout the fourth quarter to win the game 110-95.
