FREEPORT — Gertrude L. Kohler, 93, formerly of Bridgeton, N.J., and Topsham, ME, died on Feb. 23, 2015, in Freeport. She was born on Feb. 10, 1922, the daughter of David and Fannie (Lewis) Lourie.

Gertrude graduated from Bridgeton (New Jersey) High School, class of 1939. In addition to baking cakes and cookies which she sold from home, she worked in various positions as a secretary, bookkeeper, and administrative assistant until she retired in 1982.

In New Jersey, Gertrude was active with the Sisterhood at Beth Abraham Synagogue, enjoyed ceramics and knitting, and became a member of Ikebana International, a group devoted to Japanese flower arranging. She eventually earned her certification (2nd degree) as an instructor in the Sogetsu School of Ikebana.

Gertrude was predeceased by her husband, Sidney Kohler, and her son Stuart A. Kohler, but is survived by her son Barry L. Kohler and his wife Elizabeth A. Schultz of Westbrook; daughter-inlaw Deborah Daniels of Alameda, CA; her friend and former daughter-in-law, Irene Chance of Brunswick; and her many beloved grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and great-grandchildren including Jessica C. Kohler-Vaccaro of Bristol, England; Jocelyn Kohler Hooydonk of Brunswick, ME; Benjamin C. Kohler of Philadelphia; Molly E. Schaffner of Brooklyn, NY; C. Sean Gorgone of Orlando, FL; and Frederick A. Gorgone of Durham, ME.

The family will hold a private memorial service. Memorial donations may be made to Hawthorne House, 6 Old County Road, Freeport, ME 04032.
