AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Harry Ridge tossed six scoreless innings to lead the Bowdoin College baseball team to a 5-1 win over Endicott in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday.
Endicott (1-3) won the second game, 15-8.
In the opener, Ridge allowed just four hits and struck out three. Jon Fraser pitched the seventh inning, allowing an unearned run with one walk and one strikeout.
Chad Martin singled, doubled and drove in two runs to lead the Polar Bear (4-5) offense, with Sean Mullaney driving in a pair.
Harry Orringer had four hits to pace Endicott’s game two win. Orringer singled three times, doubled, scored four runs and drove in two, while Matthew Paolo singled three times and picked up three RBIs.
Cole DiRoberto had three hits for Bowdoin, with Erik Jacobsen adding two doubles, a single and two RBIs. Nick Sadler also drove in three runs for Bowdoin, with Martin driving home a pair with a double.
Logan Simon took the mound loss, going 4.2 innings on seven hits and five strikeouts.
Softball
Julia Geaumont went 3- for-4 to pace the Polar Bears to a 7-5 win over Babson on Monday in Claremont, Fla.
Geaumont doubled, singled twice, scored a run and drove in two to pace the Bowdoin (7-3) offense, while Victoria Rusch doubled twice. Kate Gately doubled in two runs.
On the mound, Claire McCarthy went the distance, allowing six hits and striking out four. The five Babson runs were all unearned.
Emily Morris had two singles for Babson (4-3).
Bowdoin’s Marisa O’Toole has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
The sophomore shortstop has hit .391 over her first seven games, collecting seven RBIs and recording an OPS of .913.
She was outstanding in Bowdoin’s season-opening win over Salve Regina, collecting three hits and five RBIs. She also had two hits in Bowdoin’s extra-inning win over Milliken. O’Toole has reached base in six of her seven games so far this spring.
Men’s basketball
Bowdoin junior Lucas Hausman and senior John Swords were recognized as All-Northeast Region selections on Monday by D3hoops.com.
Hausman was named as a First Team All-Northeast Region performer, while Swords was named to the Second Team. Hausman is Bowdoin’s first D3hoops.com First Team All-Region performer in the 14-year history of the honor.
Also Bowdoin’s first NESCAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, Hausman paced the league in scoring with 20.7 points, but saw his production rise against conference foes as he averaged 24.7 points during the regular season. He ranked fourth in the conference in freethrow percentage (87.8) and 10th in field goal percentage (49.9).
The NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year, Swords garnered his second straight Second Team All-Region honor. The 7-foot center’s presence in the paint helped the Polar Bears hold opponents to 64.2 points per game and a conference-low 38.3 percent shooting this season.
Bowdoin finished its season with a record of 18-8, advancing to the semifinals of the NESCAC Tournament.
Women’s lacrosse
The third-ranked Polar Bears continued to roll, racking up a 14-3 win over St. Lawrence University on Tuesday in Florida.
Bowdoin improved to 6-0 on the season, matching the best start for the program since 2006. The Saints fell to 1-1 on the campaign with the loss.
Bowdoin performed a clinic defensively, not allowing St. Lawrence to score for the first 32:32 of the game. For the second straight day, the Polar Bears received a fourgoal effort from Emma Beecher while Megan O’Connor had three scores and an assist. Olivia Raisner and Taylor Wilson added two goals apiece.
The Polar Bears led 7-0 at halftime and extended their lead to 9-0 early in the second period before permitting a goal. Bowdoin dominated the draw, winning 14- of-19 on the day as Wilson and Genna Warner had three draw controls apiece. Warner also scooped a teamhigh four groundballs and caused two turnovers. Sarah Freeman also had two caused turnovers and two groundballs for the Polar Bears.
In net, Isabel Sippel made four saves, allowing only the three goals over the first fifty minutes before giving way to Kayli Weiss, who made four saves in the final 9:46 of play.
Bowdoin will return to action back home at Ryan Field on Saturday at 11 a.m. against eighth-ranked Middlebury.
Women’s tennis
Bowdoin snapped its brief two-game losing streak with a 9-0 win at Whitman College on Monday afternoon.
The sixth-ranked Polar Bears improved to 4-2 and rebounded from close losses to No. 2 Emory (6-3) and No. 8 Pomona Pitzer (5-4) in the dominating sweep of the Missionaries.
The Polar Bears led 3-0 after doubles play and never looked back, losing just nine games in six straight-set singles victories. New doubles pairings featured No. 1 Joulia Likhanskaia/Tiffany Cheng claiming an 8-2 win and No. 2 duo Kyra Silitch/Tess Trinka winning 8-4. The No. 3 pairing of Emma Chow/Samantha Stalder had the closest match of the trio, but still persevered in a 9-7 win.
In singles play, Bowdoin made quick work of their opponents in six impressive wins. Likhanskaia (6-2, 6-0), Cheng (6-1, 6-0), Trinka (6-0, 6-2), Pilar Giffenig (6-2, 6-1), Stalder (6-0, 6-0) and Silitch (6-0, 6-1) each looked strong in their straight-set triumphs.
