Galaxy snap scoreless stretch, shut out Sounders

Alan Gordon scored midway through the first half and the Los Angeles Galaxy held off the Seattle Sounders 1-0 on Sunday in Carson, California, to snap a two-game scoreless stretch.

In the 23rd minute, Omar Gonzalez headed a free kick toward the far post and an unmarked Gordon headed it home in his 200th MLS appearance. It was the first goal in three games for Los Angeles (2-2-2) after being held scoreless in back-to-back matches for the first time since 2012.

• Rookie Cyle Larin scored in his first start and Kaka added a goal on a penalty kick to give expansion Orlando City a 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers in Portland, Oregon.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE: Manchester United ended a four-match losing streak against Manchester City, beating its fierce rival 4-2 in Manchester, England.

United’s sixth straight league victory came despite an opening goal in the eighth minute.

SPANISH LEAGUE: Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio’s gruesome leg injury near the end of a 1-1 draw at Getafe overshadowed play in Barcelona, Spain.

AUTO RACING

INDYCAR: James Hinchcliffe cruised to what may go down as the easiest victory of his IndyCar career at the inaugural Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana at Avondale, Lousiana.

Hinchcliffe, racing for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, pitted only once on lap 13, and then spent much of his day leading the field around the NOLA Motorsports Park under a full-course yellow flag.

FORMULA ONE: Lewis Hamilton put Mercedes back on top in Formula One, leading nearly the entire race to capture his fourth Chinese Grand Prix, at Shanghai.

Mercedes made sure there would be no repeat of Ferrari’s surprising win two weeks ago at Malaysia, as it conserved its tires wisely to withstand a challenge by Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and easily secure the top two spots on the podium.

TENNIS

FAMILY CIRCLE CUP: Angelique Kerber won six of the last seven games to rally past Madison Keys and win the 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in Charleston, South Carolina.

KATOWICE OPEN: Eighth-seeded Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia beat third-seeded Camila Giorgi of Italy 6-4, 6-3 in Katowice, Poland, in the final to clinch her first WTA title.

GRAND PRIX HASSAN II: Second-seeded Martin Klizan defeated Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2, 6-2 in the final in Casablanc, Morocco, to claim his third ATP tour title.

ROAD RACING

ROTTERDAM MARATHON: Ethiopian Abera Kuma won in Rotterdam, Netherlands, pulling away from the favorites as the pace slowed in the second half of the race after a fast start. He finished in 2:06:46.

PARIS MARATHON: Mark Korir of Kenya won in a time of 2:05:49 to claim the biggest victory of his career.
