The Ogunquit Playhouse kicks off its 83rd season with the Broadway musical comedy “Sister Act,” on stage through June 20. The musical is based on the hit Whoopi Goldberg film about a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and the cops hide her in a convent. The playhouse welcomes Broadway’s Rashidra Scott in the role of Deloris Van Cartier. “The Full Monty” will be on stage at Maine State Music Theatre through June 20. The theater is located at Pickard Theatre on the Bowdoin College Campus in Brunswick. Ticket prices for the show range from $43 to $70 and are available through the box office at 725-8769 or online at www.msmt.org.

“Victor/Victoria” will be on stage at The Ogunquit Playhouse June 24 to July 18. This is a glamorous production of the musical comedy, complete with the original and touring sets designed by Robin Wagner. The play was written by acclaimed film director Blake Edwards (”Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “The Pink Panther”) and based on his film that starred Julie Andrews, Robert Preston and James Garner. Theater at Monmouth’s Family Show “Fool of the World and the Flying Ship” opens on June 27 at 7:30 p.m. This is a classic Russian fairy tale that encourages the power of believing in yourself, the value of friendship and the importance of dreams. Additional performance dates are July 4, 11, 18, 25 and Aug. 4, 8, 11, 15 and 21 at 1 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more. The Saco River Theatre is launching a new series of summer theater camps for area middle and high school students. The Saco River Theatre Summer Theater-making intensives will be creative, week-long day camps led by professional instructors and open to area students ages 13 to 18. Camps in filmmaking take place from July 27-31. Playwriting camps will be held Aug. 3-7. The intensives will be held at Saco River Theatre at 29 Salmon Falls Road in Bar Mills. Maine State Ballet will offer summer dance workshops for students of all ages that will run through the summer. For serious ballet students in grades 5 and higher, Maine State Ballet offers an intensive summer program beginning July 6 with a comprehensive curriculum and weekly performance opportunities. The program runs daily from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and includes pointe, men’s class, variations, repertoire, partnering for advanced students, stretch, adagio, pirouettes, jazz, and modern. Students may register for any or all of the six weeks. One year of ballet training is required to participate. Maine State Ballet will also offer a pre-intensive program for dancers in third and fourth-grade. This 4 day program runs from 12:30-3:30 p.m. and features a performance at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday of each session. The program includes ballet technique, jazz, and modern dance instruction and begins June 22. One year of ballet training is required to participate. For the youngest dancers, aged 4-7, Maine State Ballet offers 3-day workshops from 9:30 a.m to noon. Students will learn ballet, tap, jazz and some singing with a performance on Thursdays at noon. The program begins June 23. All workshops take place in Maine State Ballet’s theater and classrooms at 348 U.S. Route 1 in Falmouth. ART

There will be an open house and art display on Saturday, June 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Limerick Academy Building. The event will feature art work by local artists. Also on display will be a selection of clothing. The Limerick Historical is located at 35 Main St. in Limerick.

“Paintings of Rescue Dogs” by Rachel Michaud will be on display at the University of New England’s Biddeford Campus Center through July 2. A graphic designer by trade, Michaud is the volunteer web master of the Pixel Fund, a nonprofit organization in Maine dedicated to saving the lives of shelter pets through education, advocacy, rescue efforts and participation in community events. The Arundel Farm Gallery will hold its grand opening on Friday, July 3 from 7-9 p.m. The gallery showcases the paintings and mixed media pieces of artist and owner of the gallery, Julie Feingold. Her work is inspired by early American women artists who, despite constraints placed upon them by society, expressed themselves in joyful and vibrant ways. The gallery will also feature contemporary artwork celebrating nature, farms and country living. The final segment of the PBS program, “American Photography: A Century of Images” will be shown on Wednesday July 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Barn Gallery in Ogunquit. This series conclusion covers the years 1935 through 1999 and examines the implications of the digital age when pictures can be easily altered and when pictures that might be important at a later date are casually deleted. The film will be shown on a wall-size screen amid an art exhibition. Admission is free.

MUSIC

The Sanford-Springvale Historical Society is proud to present “Full Circle” on Saturday, June 27 at 7:30 p.m. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. This wil be an evening of woodwinds and piano inspired by growing up in Sanford. Sanford native Mike McGinnis, along with pianist Erik Deutsch, will present a journey through musical worlds evoked by McGinnis’ impressions of his hometown. The duo will perform music from the standard jazz repertoire, as well as McGinnis’ original work. The Historical Museum is located at 505 Main St. in Springvale. The 97 North Band will perform on Saturday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. in Wells Harbor Park at the Hope Hobbs Gazebo. The band presents classic rock & roll from the 60’s and 70’s with heavy emphasis on music of The Beatles. This is a free outdoor concert. The audience is encourage to bring blankets, chairs and picnics.

The “Corona Brothers Beach Party” will take place on July 2 at 5 p.m. with doors opening at 4:30 p.m. at Goodall Park in Sanford. The show will feature the music of three bands: The Corona Brothers, American Made and Northern Charm. This event is rain or shine. There will be covered stadium seating or people are invited to bring their own lawn chairs. Margaritas and Corona beer will be available. Tickets are $10 in advance. Victorian Tea will perform on Sunday, July 19 from 1-4 p.m. at Parsonsfield Seminary, Route 160 in North Parsonsfield. The presentation will be done by reenactor Gwendolyn Quezaire Presutti, with music by harpist Judy Saiki of Boston Philhormonic Orchestra. Victorian victuals will be served. Tickets are $15 pre-paid and $20 at the door.

“The Painters’ Panorama: Narrative, Art, and Faith in the Moving Panorama of Pilgrim’s Progress” is a new book from the Saco Museum featuring essays by South Portland resident Jessica Skwire Routhier and York Beach resident Thomas Hardiman, Jr. The book is the culmination of a decades-long project to preserve and reinterpret this 800-foot-long panoramic painting from 1851, which is in the collection of the Saco Museum. The summer reading program kicks off at Dyer Library with “The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow” on June 27 from 11 a.m. to noon. The reading features 20 of our hand-crafted mouth and rod puppets and some shadow puppetry. The length of show is approximately 50 minutes long and is recommended for ages 4 and up. The show will be held in the C.K Burns gym. There will also be a yard sale fundraiser on June 27 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds of the sale benefit the programs offered at the Dyer Library/Saco Museum. The Dyer Library/Saco Museum is seeking donations of gently used, family friendly goods to sell at the yard sale. Donations can be dropped off starting on June 13 at the library. They ask that no one donate cribs, mattresses, car seats, upholstered furniture or appliances. Volunteers are also needed to sort, price, set up and work at the sale.
