A February 19, 1956 Press Herald photograph shows the Portland Gas Light Company complex on West Commercial Street, looking west from the former Million Dollar Bridge.
In the present day, the site still hosts a small complex of propane tanks, but it is surrounded by construction for an expanding cargo terminal. Last week, the Maine Department of Transportation requested bids to build a new cold-storage warehouse on the gas works site to help grow the port’s container-shipping business.
The Portland Room of the Portland Public Library is in the process of organizing and conserving the archival collection of original Portland Press Herald, Maine Sunday Telegram and Evening Express photographic negatives — a major collection that spans from 1937 to 2005.
