PORTLAND — Monica Mary (Ezzy) Merrill, 76, died June 11 at Mercy Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Merrill was born March 4, 1939, in Van Buren, the daughter of Maron Ezzy and Luella (Sites) Athanasion.

Merrill was known for her love of cooking, especially Lebanese dinners including baked kibi, grape leaf and cabbage rolls, stuffed eggplant, meat pies, Syrian salad and baklava. In 1981, she realized a lifelong dream when she opened the Sandwich Shoppe in East Machias, allowing her to share her cooking with many others.

She was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Katherine Ezzy; her brother, Maron Ezzy; her husband, Wayne Frye; her son, Stephen Ackley; and her granddaughter, Taylor Gross.

Merrill is survived by her siblings, Greg Ezzy, Jackie Fitzmaurice, Lou Ezzy, Gale Maxner, Carol Ezzy, Pamela Maiorano, Patricia Ezzy, Marion Oliver, Mike Ezzy and Tammy Packard; her children, Dave Ackley, Dan Ackley, Lauri Huntley, Joe Ackley and Becky Frye; her stepchildren, Vickie Kilton, Rick Frye, Lisa Frye and Barbie Yentsch; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are welcome to attend a graveside service at the Longfellow Cemetery in Machias on Saturday, July 11, at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish are asked to make memorial donations to the American Cancer Society.
