As a physician and public health professional with experience and knowledge of our federal, state and local healthcare systems, I felt compelled to comment on the recent news of the Mid Coast Hospital – Parkview Adventist Medical Center partnership. Randee Reynolds of Parkview and Lois Skillings of Mid Coast are showing true leadership by working together to solve a local healthcare crisis.

Parkview Hospital holds a very special place in our community. However, with a population of about 40,000 in the Brunswick-Bath-Topsham area, healthcare economics show this is insufficient to support two hospitals. Parkview has reached a point where it can no longer serve its mission as a stand-alone hospital. Mid Coast is an exemplary hospital, only made stronger now by welcoming in and joining with Parkview and its talented clinical and support staff.

While other Maine communities continue to lose local healthcare options, we are very fortunate for this opportunity that shows how community leaders can come together to solve problems, preserve access to quality care, and do what is best for our community.
