AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine’s Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is now accepting applications for the state’s antlerless deer hunting permit lottery.
Online applications for the upcoming deer hunting season are due by 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 17. Paper applications are due in person or by mail by 5 p.m. on July 27. The lottery is free and the drawing is scheduled for Sept. 9.
The state uses the antlerless deer permit system to manage its white-tailed deer population through controlling the harvest of females. Maine is issuing 28,770 permits in 15 of the state’s 29 wildlife management districts. The state issued 37,185 permits last year.
The hunt begins with Youth Deer Hunting Day on Oct. 24. Maine “residents only day” follows on Oct. 31.
