WATERVILLE — The Atlantic Music Festival kicks off Friday, beginning three weeks of free classical music concerts and workshops at Colby College.

The festival, which is in its seventh year, will feature free concerts at the college’s Museum of Art as well as other performances that are free and open to the public.

“We have a series of different concerts, and there will be tons going on the entire month,” said Brent Jackson, a spokesman for the festival.

The series will run through Aug. 2 and will feature nearly 200 classical musical performers, including Mari Kimura, a Julliard professor who specializes in technologically enhanced orchestral renditions called Future Music Lab, and Carla Rae Cook, an opera singer recently featured at Carnegie Hall.

The festival also is continuing its I Am Four Years Old campaign, with all concert proceeds donated to charity. This year, the money is going toward the Atlantic Music Festival Visionary Fellowship and Grant, which supports musicians participating in the festival.

The festival opens with a preview concert at 7 p.m. Friday at Lorimer Chapel and features the Cassatt String Quartet with guest composers Laura Kaminsky, John Corigliano and Daniel Godfrey.

An official opening is planned for 7 p.m. Saturday at Lorimer Chapel, with David Amado conducting the Atlantic Music Festival Orchestra.

The festival also will include chamber music performances at the Colby Museum of Art on July 19 and 26.
