He was born in Portland, Maine, on Jan. 18, 1944, the son of Edward F. and Geneva A. (York) Alexander.
He first attended school in Cundy’s Harbor and graduated from Brunswick High School in 1962.
On June 14, 1963, on Bailey’s Island, he married Ann E. Doughty.
In 1966, he was drafted and spent four years in the Navy. Much of 1969, he spent off Viet Nam on the aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard stationed on the front line and was also sent to Da Nang to repair a ship’s plane which had been shot down.
At the age of ten, he began lobstering which, for the most part, he continued until last November. For all the hard work, he never regretted his choice of occupation, and his last boat was his pride and joy. During their school years, both daughters served as his “sternmen.” Later he enjoyed having both of his grandsons also serve as his “sternmen.” Not one to sit idle during the winter months, he took work going on the draggers, Golden Dawn and Danella, fishing for shrimp, scallops and ground fish and worked at Auerbach Shoe and the Shrimp Lab. He also worked for Fred Perry and Daughters drilling wells and built his own lobster traps.
He liked camping, going to stock car races and watching his grandchildren participating in their activities. He enjoyed nature especially watching birds at the home feeder and feeding the gulls which regularly visited his boat. He found enjoyment in learning about and reading the Bible. After a long day at haul, he liked to relax by taking a ride on his Harley. His English Setter dogs gave him much enjoyment.
