The Portland teachers’ union has endorsed former state Sen. Ethan Strimling for mayor, Strimling’s campaign announced Wednesday.

The Portland Education Association, which has over 700 members, is the latest group to back Strimling, who hopes to unseat Mayor Michael Brennan.

Strimling leads the nonprofit LearningWorks, which provides educational programming to at-risk, low income and immigrants kids and families. Brennan, who is running on his record of economic development and personal initiatives, two of which are focused on education.

Strimling lost to incumbent Brennan in the 2011 mayoral race by about 1,900 votes and has been touting a series of endorsements during this campaign, including from city firefighters and other labor unions, the Portland Community Chamber of Commerce, four out of eight city councilors and seven out of nine school board members.

Portland Green Party Chairman Tom MacMillan is also running for mayor. Election Day is Nov. 3.
