SANFORD — A man sought by police after his probation was revoked in connection with his 2006 conviction for stabbing the mother of his children and a Sanford police officer with a screwdriver has been arrested in Massachusetts.
Christopher William Gonyer, 40, was arrested by Cambridge Police Monday afternoon, around 3:15 p.m., one week after Sanford police asked for the public’s help in locating the man, whom they described as dangerous.
Det. Sgt. Matthew Jones in a release said Gonyer was taken into custody without incident.
Gonyer hadn’t been seen since Nov. 4, when he allegedly fled from the office of his probation officer in Biddeford.
Jones said Sanford detectives determined that Gonyer was working installing flooring in Cambridge and so police here asked their Cambridge counterparts for help and gave them the location where Gonyer was said to be.
“Mr. Gonyer arrived at the site shortly after detectives arrived and was taken into custody without incident,” Jones wrote in the statement. “Mr. Gonyer was also found to be in possession of heroin and is facing additional charges in Massachusetts for drug possession. All indications were that Mr. Gonyer had fled the state to avoid detection, and had no intention of turning himself in. The Sanford Police Department extends their sincere thanks to the Cambridge Police Department for their quick work in helping us bring this fugitive to justice.”
In 2006, Gonyer pleaded guilty to punching his former girlfriend in the stomach and then stabbing her, her friend and a Sanford police officer with a screwdriver. He was sentenced to spend four years and nine months of an eight year sentence in prison.
Sanford police used non-lethal bean-bag rounds to subdue Gonyer on March 30, 2006, after he fled the mid-day scene and they chased him through downtown neighborhoods.
During his sentencing in August 2006, Assistant District Attorney Justina McGettigan said Gonyer was dragging his former girlfriend across a porch when a friend tried to intervene. McGettigan said Gonyer cut his girlfriend across the throat with the screwdriver. As the fracas continued, both women were stabbed with the screwdriver.
When Sanford Police Officer Mark Dyer arrived, he jumped over the porch to try and prevent a further assault and Gonyer drove a screwdriver into Dyer’s chest. The police officer was wearing a protective vest, and the screwdriver was deflected. Then Gonyer stabbed Dyer in the upper arm.
Two other police officers arrived on the scene, he ran, and officers pursued him, using the bean-bag rounds to subdue the man.
