Many of us who read and contribute to the Letters to the Editor section of this newspaper rue the increasing lack of civility between people holding opposing political views. As the 2016 election approaches, the tone and intensity of this dialogue have only gotten worse.
As an antidote, I suggest the excellent article by Ron Currie Jr. that appears in this month’s Down East magazine, “My Intractable, Gun-Loving, Anti-Government, Right-Wing Cousin (Who I Like a Lot).” It is the most thoughtful, insightful and hopeful piece I have come across regarding the sad abyss that has opened up in our society.
