GARDINER (AP) — Fire officials say an 1890 Victorian home along the banks of the Kennebec River in Gardiner was destroyed by a blaze that took crews several hours to extinguish.

The fire broke out at the three- story home on Riverview Drive around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday. The house is a two-unit home but only one family lived there at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported.

Fire Chief Al Nelson says it’s unclear how the fire started, but it appears to have originated near the back of the home.

A neighbor first reported the blaze after witnessing windows breaking and heavy smoke emanating from the 7,200-square-foot building.

Nelson says it took nearly three hours to douse the flames. Crews from Augusta, Farmingdale, Pittston, Togus and West Gardiner assisted Gardiner firefighters.
