BIDDEFORD — Coming into Saturday’s Class A South girls basketball clash, the Biddeford Tigers were 1-8, while the visiting Greely Rangers sat at 7-2 on the season.

Despite the big difference in records, the Tigers gave the Rangers all they could handle for two quarters, but Greely would eventually pull away for a 53-32 win.

“Coming into it, our game plan was to just play solid man-to-man defense, keep them from getting to the paint and force the outside shot,” said Biddeford coach Liz Bell.

That game plan worked to near perfection in the first half as Biddeford held Greely’s shooters in check and trailed by just two at 24-22 at the break.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Rangers’ top shooters – Isabel Porter and Moira Train – came to life in the second half. Both Porter and Train would hit two 3-pointers to help Greely outscore Biddeford 29-10 in the second half.

“They made a lot of (outside shots) tonight. You know, if a team is going to shoot at that high of a percentage, congratulations to them,” said Bell.

One positive for the Tigers on Saturday was the fact that they had their expected starting five on the floor for the first time this season.

“Overall, I was really impressed. We have Grace Martin and Brook Davis back full force, so it’s really nice to put the full team that we were expecting to have at the beginning of the season out on the floor,” said Bell.

Davis and Martin would score eight points apiece for the Tigers, who also got a team-high 12 points from Brittany Roy.

Bell was also happy to see her team fight until the end against a tough Greely squad.

“I think our girls put in a great effort,” said Bell. “That’s something that we as a coaching staff try to instill in them on a daily basis. We never quit, never give up, never give up on a possession, never give up on a game, regardless of how close or how far the score is apart. We try to teach them to fight, so I was impressed with the effort for the full length.”
