ALFRED — A livestock water heating unit is believed to have caused a barn fire. Firefighters responded to call of a fire in a barn around 4 p.m. Sunday at 330 Biddeford Road, said Alfred Assistant Fire Chief Michael Fraser. The fire is believed to have started outside the barn in a water bucket heating unit used for water for horses, said Fraser. The fire was contained to the back of the barn, primarily one wall and a bale of hay. No one was injured, said Fraser. The barn and attached home sustained some smoke damage. Fraser said the last fire truck left the scene around 5:30 p.m. Crews from Goodwins Mills, Waterboro, Ross Corner and Sanford assisted.
