Lego Robotics Summer Day Camp

Registration is now open for the School Administrative District 6 Lego Robotics Summer Camp. Taught by three district-certified instructors, the purpose of the program is to offer opportunities in building and problem-solving using Legos.

The program is divided into three groups: beginners, intermediates and mixed.

The beginner group is designed for children aged 6-8 years old. This group will be involved in the beginning stages of Lego engineering and design. Campers will learn about building simple and motorized machines.

The Intermediate group features children ages 7-9 who have previously been to Lego camp.

Mixed camp will consist of two separate groups: Children ages 7-9 and children ages 9-12. The mixed group is for campers of all levels of experience. Campers in this group have been using NXT kits and the Mindstorms programming software to design and engineer robots.

Youth Soccer Clinic

The Maine Soccer Academy will host winter youth development training for children 8-11 years old, starting Jan. 31, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Saint Joseph’s College Gymnasium. The program will run for five Sundays with one practice per week, ending March 6.

The clinic will focus on developing a player’s ability to control the ball, build their confidence with the ball at their feet, develop basic small-sided tactical decision making, and having fun with peers. All of the practices will end with games with coaches officiating.

The clinic costs $50 and participants are encouraged to register by email at adubois@sjcme.edu.

Visit with the state senator and representatives

On Saturday, Feb. 6, state Sen. Bill Diamond will be joining Rep. Lester Ordway and Rep. Jonathan Kinney for public office hours. Residents are welcome to attend and to meet at the Standish town office from 9-11 a.m.

Diamond represents Senate District 26, which includes the communities of Baldwin, Casco, Frye Island, Raymond, Standish and Windham.

Ice bar with a cause

The Saint Joseph College Alumni Association is hosting the Fourth Annual Ice Bar on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 6-9 p.m. at the Alfond Center on the Saint Joseph’s Campus, located on White’s Bridge Road in Standish.

The annual tradition brings together fire, ice and good friends. The event features a cash bar, fire pits, and a cozy indoor lounge for guests that don’t appreciate the freezing temperatures. This 21-plus event is open to alumni, as well as members of the local community. Winter fun attire is recommended.

Tickets, which include one drink ticket as well as hors d’oeuvres, are $30 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship. For more information contact the Alumni Office at 893-7890 or email alumni@sjcme.edu.

Special town meeting

The town of Sebago is holding a special referendum on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at the Sebago town office.

The town will be asked if they favor filing a petition for withdrawal from School Administrative District 61. Polls will be open from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. To view the referendum in its entirety visit www.townofsebago.org.

Backpack lunch program seeking donations

The SAD 6 Transportation Department Continuous Improvement Team will be collecting food items for the Weekend BackPack Program on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at Plummers Supermarket located at 235 Parker Farm Road, Buxton.

Donations should be shelf-stable, healthy food items and can be brought to the school bus located in the parking lot.

The District Backpack program is designed to reach students who have food insecurity during the weekend, when the school’s lunch program is not available since school is closed. Each week during the school year the program sends 120 backpacks per week home with students across SAD 6. The backpacks are filled with easy-to-prepare food and given to children who are food-deprived at home.

Kids Night Out

Saint Joseph’s College is hosting Kids Night Out in the Alfond Recreation Center on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 5:30-9 p.m. for kids ages 7-13. The cost is $12 for one child and $6 each additional child per family, which includes swimming, a rock climbing wall, movies, games, sports and arts & crafts. Concessions are available. Participants cannot register before the event as it is on-site registration only.
